600 ANNUAL EEPOET SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION, 1910. one body, fell into a number of separate parts. At the present time, and even throughout the period covered by history, Slav people as one national unit no longer exist; their place is occupied by a line of more or less related Slavic nations. It is most probable, however, that the original Slav people, the nucleus of which occupied the region of the rivers Oder and Dnieper, but who already in the prehistoric times were reaching in places to the Elbe, Saal, and Donau, as well as to the Baltic Sea, fell gradually apart into three primary groups.

this is an old ethnography and that's how it goes, but the photographs are marvelous and any of you women out there who ever wondered where to find ancient neglected miracles of human creation, here they are. It's probably a matter of focus: when we are totally driven to produce something wonderful, we can meet the challenge. Some people aim high and get there! You can't buy these today, but, maybe if you had the time to enjoy a few weeks in Indian Country around a trading post (like the one in Tuba city) you might see an Indian woman come in to try and sell her lastest creation. If she is leaving with her basket and a glum face, buy the basket from her. Then you have the book, and the basket, and overstanding of a way of life. In my opinion, one of the "crimes" of Mainstream Society is that it neglects the genius of the fringe people--who don't make the big bucks, or drive the cute cars, or make adult celebrity news. there are other crafts, musics, and arts that we have missed knowing because of this, & other elders who never got Known. At least, here you can see their work, and their visions of what a simple thing is. Respect. ("The stone that the builder refuse...")

This is an historic classic. The reproduction is a little confusing, in terms of how it follows the original, but the original content and illustrations are well done. A good buy.
