If you have a note that has dropped in pitch, do you have to call in the tuner? A stuck key? Sympathetic rattle? Missing bridles? A broken hammer shank? An unglued ivory? The answer, in each case, is no: you can make all of these repairs yourself! This is the clearest and most complete book available for beginning tuners and amateur pianists. It explains all the basic processes practically and with model clarity. A non-musician can use this book without too much difficulty. You will learn how upright, grand, and square actions work, and how to take care of the smallest repairs — repairing stuck keys, poorly adjusted bottoms and capstans, crowded back checks, felts and leather on the hammers, hammer stems; softening damper and hammer felts; installing new bridles; eliminating "sympathetic rattle"; all with a minimum of tools and training. You will learn a professional method of tuning based on slightly flattened fifths, where only the octave and the upward fifth intervals are used. This is one of the easiest systems to learn, one capable of a great deal of control, and one perfectly suited to adjusting one or two keys. It is a tested method especially right for amateurs working without a teacher, and a method that trains the ear for other recommended systems. The author also explains "beats," the theory of the tempered scale, and useful experiments you can make with harmonic phenomena. If you want to experiment with tuning a piano, there is no better book to start with. It will help performers and teachers make occasional repairs and learn the structure and scale of the piano. Those who want to know how pianos work will find this book both clear and useful.

Not as represented. Written in 1907. Where the information may still be valid the writing style is out of date and very wordy. There are NO pictures or diagrams. Not even the picture shown in the advertisement. It does not look like what is shown. It looks like a Xerox copy of a type written manuscript. The author assumes only men would ever learn to tune a piano and makes references to documents that are out of publication, but are required reading before you can proceed. Although Google searches can fill in for it.

Unfortunately the Kindle edition has no images / diagrams / pictures whatever which makes the book a waste of time. Had the images in the book been translated to the Kindle view it might have been ok. Without these the point references are meaningless to someone who is a novice as I, myself, am.

If it had the images in it, it might have been of some worth. I guess I won't know.

If you are looking for a book to learn how to tune a piano this is probably not what you are looking for. This appears to be a reprint of an old book from 1907. This book is full of archaic references, no drawings or diagrams and is not helping me learn how to tune a piano. I take responsibility for not checking out the book in more detail before purchasing it. This is a book for someone who want to collect reprints of old books that are now mostly irrelevant. Do not waste your money unless you are a book collector.

Zero Stars. Not sent the book advertised - What came was a typewritten 95 page version of the 224p dover book from another publisher. All illustrations had been removed, though references were still in the text. This is a fraudulent advertisement.
And even if you get the real book, this is a 1907 book, NOT a 1975 book as listed. So unless you want to know how to tune a 19th century piano in the methods of the time, this book is worthless.

I have been a professional piano technician for 25 years. I enjoyed reading this book, written about 1907. I am doing some research for a novel that I'm writing that includes a character who becomes a piano technician around 1935-40, and wanted to read what information he might have had access to while learning his new trade. Interestingly enough, things haven't changed a great deal in the last 100 years, since pianos designs have not radically changed. Our tuning methods have changed, of course (because of electronic tuning devices) and some names of parts have changed, but many things have remained the same. It was an interesting (and occasionally amusing) book.

I downloaded this free book from Amazon with the expectation that it would offer some practical methods for do-it-yourself piano tuning. The title, "A simple and accurate method for amateurs," led me to believe it would touch on the way use the tuning mutes and other equipment. I did not expect to encounter page after page of lists of frequencies of the various notes of a piano and endless discourse on the "theories" of tuning. But that's what I got. Maybe the original edition (not the Kindle edition) is more helpful, since the kindle edition has stripped the book of all illustrations. I would suggest the book called "Piano repairing and tuning" (I THINK that's the name). That one allowed me to tweak my baby grand between professional tunings and was much more helpful.
Was not what the title described - very old-fashioned language (copyright 1907!), way too academic, too complex, and WAY over my head as a piano owner who just wants to learn how to tune my own grand piano - bought an electronic tuner, lever (hammer) and mutes, and watched a YouTube video to learn how to do it - MUCH better than buying this book!
