The Meaning of Art book.

The Meaning of Art book. Book by Read, Herbert. Herbert Read offers a definition of what makes art, but his definition was already passé thanks to Marcel Duchamp, who had upended the importance of aesthetics nearly two decades before this book was written. Everything that follows is just as outdated, and hence as pointless. Along with Kenneth Clark and Ersnt Gombrich, Herbert Read is part of the holy trinity of the modern tradition of art history writing.

Since its first appearance in 1931 Herbert Read's introduction to the understanding of art has established itself as a classic of its kind. It provides a basis for the appreciation of paintings, sculpture and art-objects of all periods by defining the elements that went into their making.

Sir Herbert Read (1893-1968) was a poet, and a literary and art critic. His experiences in the trenches led to his first collections of poetry; these in turn introduced him to the London literary world, and he contributed to T. S. Eliot's journal The Criterion. The intellectualcareer of Herbert Read ( I893-1968) has been mapped out in two authoritative books, and it is not necessary to provide any complete summary here. But as a preliminary to a description of Read's concerns during the period of writing Art and Industry, it will be helpful to point to some features of his development before 1934. In response to Read's Listener article on 'The meaning of art', Gill wrote: 'I don't believe the working artist really desires to "communicate his exceptional vision" to his fellow me. .It seems to me perfectly certain that the artist's function is simply maker of things.

In this classical study of the history of Art History Read interweaves definitions of fundamental conceptions with descriptions of works of art. He strives to give us an understanding of the difference between different forms of Art and Beauty. He writes to help us understand fundamental concepts such as Form and Expression, Pattern, Empathy, Abstract Art, Humanistic Art., Line, Tone,Color and Form.

But the bulk of the book is a history of Western art , from Primitive Art via the major figures of Western Art to the moderns Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.

In the third section of the work he considers, subjects such as ' the Artist's point- of-view , Tolstoy and Wordsworth, Art and Society, The will- to-form . He concludes with a small chapter 'The ultimate values'. The book's illustrations are excellent.

In his concluding paragraph Read states his credo:

"The ultimate values of art transcend the individual and his time and circumstance. They express an ideal proportion or harmony which the artist can grasp only in virtue of his intuitive powers. In expressing his intuition the artist willuse materials placed in his hands by the circumstances of histime: at one period he will scratch on the walls ofhis cave, at another he will build or decorate a temple or cathedral, at another he will paint a canvas for a limited circle ofconnoisseurs. The true artist is indifferent to the materials and conditions imposed upon him. He accepts any conditions, so long as they can be used to express his will-to- form. Then in the wider mutations ofhistory his efforts are magnified, or diminished, taken up or dismissed, by forces which he cannot predict, and which have very little to do with the values of which he is the exponent. It is his faith that those values are nevertheless among the eternal attributes of humanity."

My major study is theory of art. Herbert Read's [The meaning of Art] is about art, aesthetics, art institiution, and principle conceptions like 'Golden section', 'Pattern', 'Form', 'Empathy', and 'Content' and so on. And this book very small size and including picture. For that contents, this book is good for beginners but not fit to major students, so to speak, students majoring art history. Read is also famous for art theory educator in the world. the writing is so easy to understand for that reason.
