Painting the Landscape in Pastel by Albert Handell and Anita Louise West (2000, Paperback). I work in pastels and have always admired the work of Carole Katchen. The book is full of wonderful examples of several artists' techniques using the pastel medium and "how-to" instructions on color development. I would recommend it for an intermediate pastel artist.

I first came across this at our local library and was pleased to find a good copy available here. I also saw that this author is interviewed on youtube. Lovely man. There are also links to his classes available in related links as well. Exploration into pastel from initial exposure to oil is handled very nicely here. This book has many good painting tips that translate to any medium.

This is the most brilliant art book I’ve ever read. Albert Handell is a master–his work is breathtaking. He and his co-writer have, Anita Louise West, not only clearly and succintly show you how to use the medium, but they also clearly explain art principles you can use in any medium!
Scream_I LOVE YOU
This beautiful book is very informative, including a few step-by-step demos by Handell.
Also helpful is his very specific information on the brand of paper, and/or pastel colors he uses.
For one particular green pastel stick, he even gives us the number of the stick.
I gave this book a "4" because it was very heavy on Southwest painting subjects and I assumed
it would have more of a variety of painting topics. For the used -dollar price, though,
I still think it was a good buy and it is nice to now own a book by one of the Greats.

I have this book, in the softbound edition. Any of his books on Pastel are worth having. I am always amazed that what he starts out doing so quick and loosely...can turn out looking so detailed and exact! He is a true professional Artist, and his books are worth getting and following. He has a special way with light, and most of his works in here are from around Santa Fe, N.M. which has a unique light of its own, so ...very inspiring!
I am a professional portrait artist who specializes in pastels so I am familiar with Albert Handell through several pastel magazines. He is a master at the western (ie:New Mexico, Arizona, etc.) landscapes with his remarkable color pallette of those regions! I don't think any pastelist paints rocks and trees better than this man. The writing style is a little elementary but the information is refreshingly straightforward, informative and easily understood. You won't find vague, ethereal wanderings from this guy! The many photos are clear and beautiful. His "step by step" sequences actually show the reader something useful and attainable.:-). This is a must have addition for the library of any pastel artist....
