Stern presents thirty-one of his most significant houses in the United States. This diverse group, which ranges in location from the seaside to the mountains to the city, displays the important characteristics of Stern's architecture: a sympathetic relationship to the site, a richness of plan and spatial complexity, a distinctive use of natural light, and elegant interior detail. As demonstrated by the projects presented here-- generously illustrated through color photographs, drawings, and watercolors-- the architect has created in each house a complete domestic world for his clients to inhabit. The visual presentation of the houses is accompanied by an introduction which provides an overview of the common themes in the architect's work, and a project list, which includes detailed information about each project.

This is a stunning collect of residences designed by the masterful Robert Stern, captured in large, colorful photos. If Stern's design sense and residential architecture is your thing, there is little on these pages that isn't pleasing to the eye. The accompanying notes from Clive Aslet are clearly written, and the author has done a good job of selecting an interesting array of residences for the book. This one I leave out on the coffee table -- people seem to inevitably pick it up.
