Hunting a Detroit Tiger (A Mickey Rawlings Mystery). Troy Soos drops the reader deep into 1920s America, utilising his baseball playing amateur sleuth Mickey Rawlings as both a fascinating character and a prism through which to view American society of the time. It's often not a pretty picture. While the Roaring 20s might have been a golden age for baseball and some other areas of society, it was also a time of much division.

WUNDERKIND
Intriguing plot. Impressive description. Informative setting. Utility player Mickey Rawlings solves a murder, survives a season as Ty Cobb’s teammate and gets back together with actress-friend Margie by Labor Day. I’m a fan of Troy Soos’ baseball mysteries, but I’m an even bigger fan of Rex Stout’s “Nero Wolfe” stories. One reason is that the Rawlings stories often feel like a 21st century progressive is presenting his romanticized idea of what an early 20th century progressive was like, whereas the Wolfe characters seem more nuanced and interesting because Stout was spinning yarns about his own time. The present is more complicated than an idealized past. For example, all of the progressives in this book seem either unreal (John Montgomery Ward) anachronistic (Rawlings) or like plaster saints (Karl Landfors), while others seem like stereotypical stock villains (Charles Comiskey). An acquaintance with such works as Thomas Leonard’s “Illiberal Reformers” and Tim Hornbaker’s “Turning the Black Sox White” would help give these characters more depth. Still, I like the plot, the descriptions and the information about Detroit.

outstanding
Mickey Rawlings is a mediocre infielder who keeps changing baseball teams, yet stumbles over dead bodies with each new team. Our hero is embroiled in the death of a retired baseball player and union organizer. The police have labelled the death as self defense from Mickey, but Mickey knows he has nothing to do with it. Meanwhile, both the union members (the "wobblies"), Mickey's baseball teammates, the baseball owners, and a scary component of the federal government are all tugging at Mickey in opposite directions over the issue of his support or lack of support for labor unions in general. Mickey is most concerned about clearing his name so some overzealous wobblies don't go after him with a vendetta. Plenty of baseball and romance are sprinkled into the mix. As other reviewers have noted, this book carries a social message too. Enjoy the history and the mystery.
