Offering a presentation of the two distinct orientations currently prevalent among urban sociologists, this study discusses classical urban sociology's concern with "urbanism" and the "political economy" of urban change. A new section on Mesoamerican and Chinese urban centres and expanded coverage of women's issues is included along with sections on minorities and ethinic groups. Extended descriptions of Lagos, Bangkok, Managua and Nicaragua are incorporated in order to help students understand the Third World city. Discussion on homelessness, the changing urban policies of Western European governments and urban policy in China are also expanded.
