Kenneth Sidney Coates (16 September 1930 – 27 June 2010) was a British politician and writer. He was a Labour Party Member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1998 until his expulsion, and then an independent member of GUE/NGL from 1998 to 1999.

Ken Coates was a flower of the labour movement. He leaves behind comrades with warm memories and a determination to build on his achievements. Condolences to his nearest and dearest.

Ken served as a director of the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation and helped to found the Institute for Workers' Control, European Nuclear Disarmament and many other organisations. Ken worked as a miner, adult education tutor and served as a Labour MEP up to his expulsion from the party in 1999 for opposition to Tony Blair's policies. Ken Coates was a prolific writer of articles, essays, pamphlets and books most of which were printed by Spokesman Books.
