The sociology of education is the study of how public institutions and individual experiences affect education and its outcomes. Education is seen as a fundamentally optimistic human endeavour characterised by aspirations for progress and betterment.

Social pedagogy describes a holistic and way of working in care and educational settings with people across the course of their lives. In many countries across Europe (and increasingly beyond), it has a long-standing tradition as a field of practice and academic discipline concerned with addressing social inequality and facilitating social change by nurturing learning, well-being and connection both at an individual and community level

The conference, Social Pedagogy and Social Education: Bridging Traditions and Innovations, was held with the intention of bringing together academics and practitioners of social pedagogy and social education around the world. Social pedagogy and social education are sometimes considered as equivalent and sometimes are understood as distinct, yet related fields. The paper embraces some basic concepts of spatial sociology, to draw a definition of the 'disciplinary edge' within social sciences and also looks provocatively at the boundaries and opportunities posed by being on the edge of the disciplines and on the edge of international thought.

The educational and cultural determinants of the tempo and direction of transformation of the democratic and the normative order in post-totalitarian society are analysed. The author's analyses presented in this book attempt to answer the following question: How does one pass from normative order to normative integration? Which properties of the new systemic educational identity are conductive to the active creation of social normative order in Poland? What is the religious adaptation to the new state formation? Is it possible in a short time to build in Poland a new pragmatic and progressive educational system based on the unified school which is democratic with unified education and the freedom of choice?
