The "Oreo Biscuit" was first developed and produced by the National Biscuit Company (today known as Nabisco) in 1912 at its Chelsea, Manhattan factory in the current-day Chelsea Market complex, located on Ninth Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets.

The women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s sought to empower women to work outside the home. Although many middle-class women were educated, many were also underpaid and frustrated with their lifestyle. Reformers wanted women to end workplace discrimination and reform many aspects of birth control.
