Gathris
This book, originally published in 1963 and 1965. It quickly became the "bible" to those interested in the early French furniture in colonial Canada.
It was the first book to organize and regionalize furniture based on the various motifs and carvings. Truly a magnificent volume.
Try to get the original large size "hardcover" book(s) as its value to the reader is based on the photos. The later edition(s) are half the size of the original book and lack color photos.

This is a "must have" for both artisan cabinetmakers and collectors. No disappointments here.

On a lighter note, I was told that old bed on the book's cover is not in fact a complete bed, but that the headboard was indeed made up for the photo session. This is witnessed by the two upright "headposts" being covered by the canopy drape.

First published by Jean Palardy in 1963 in both English and French. The book was a large hardcover volume. The second edition was published in 1965. These first two printings used both black and white photos and contained color chapter plates as well. The book was reprinted (softcover), several times during the 1970-1980's and the size was reduced and photos were in black and white only.
This book is the bible for any one interested in early Quebec pine furniture. It discuses regional differences as well as construction methods. The time frame covers late 1600's to early 1800's. Lavishly illustrated with photos. If you can, get one of the large early printing volumes.
