Ion channels are proteins with a hole down the middle embedded in cell membranes. Membranes form insulating structures and the channels through them allow and control the movement of charged particles, spherical ions, mostly Na+, K+, Ca++, and Cl-. Membranes contain hundreds or thousands of types of channels, fluctuating between open conducting, and closed insulating states.

This is probably the most comprehensive book on ion channels and ionic transfers I have ever seen. It is written in a completely professional and natural tone that is much easier to understand than having to read all of the academic articles that are summarized in the book. It is definitely not a coffee table book for a rainy day reading but for serious scientists who would like to review the entire knowledge without having to read each and every article or theory ever presented, it is superb. I am at an awe of its detail and thorough review of this very tiny and most important system of the body. Since ion channels make the body what it is in its functions, this book is more important to read than any other medical book if one really wants to understand how to body works and wants to find the cause of many illnesses.

I recommend to the reader to read the history at the very beginning, which is fascinating, and then skip to those sections of most interest before getting into protein folds at the channels since those will not likely to make much sense without understanding the function of a channel. It also means very little to see protein folds and how ions move until you actually see what an ion means in terms of its function and then you will understand the complexity of the protein fold.

I often wondered why biological and medical books appear to always start with the most complex of topics and then later explain what they meant. I would most certainly move the first chapter to the end. But otherwise the book is a joy and explains a lot to scientists, researchers of human biological functions, and for MDs to understand what those medicines do that they prescribe! This book indirectly explains all there is to know about the state of medicine today and its lack of understanding the basic need for life--hence we end up with all the side effects associated with taking medicines!

The content of the book is very good and it's exactly what I was looking for, but the book I got was literally a photocopy of an original book. It was completely black and white ( except for the paperback cover). Definitely not what the picture showed on the website, not only it clearly looked that it wasn't a photocopy (It shows too much that it was a photocopy), but it wasn't not even a good photocopy. . Too expensive for a cheap photocopy. I don't know if that what they mean when they said its a reprint. I returned it.
