The erudition underlying this deep-digging analysis and subtle interpretation of Quranic discourse and its significance for present-day Muslims is ironically also the weakness of Shabbir Akhtar’s latest book. Aside from a critical engagement with Islamic scripture, it is also the author’s intention not just to ‘revive among Muslims the tradition of philosophy itself’ (3), but in fact, ‘to establish a philosophy of Islam’ (2). Although Akhtar claims that he is ‘simply a philosopher of religion investigating Islam’s founding text in its confrontation with secular humanism’ (11).

Here, Akhtar does have strong points to make from an interesting perspective. The problem is to understand his approach to Islam, at least conceived of as philosophical. He does, for example, tell us that Islamic thought does not recognise the problem of evil as fundamental and dismisses the difficulties over survival of death by airily telling us to assume that the concept is not "flatly incoherent". Would that philosophy were generally as easy as that. By Shabbir Akhtar Routledge 416pp £8. 0 and £2. 9 ISBN 9780415437820 and 437837 Published 30 September 2007. Register to continue.
