Stephen Poliakoff's fourth play for the National Theatre, Remember This, was directed by Ron Daniels and starred Stanley Townsend and Geraldine Somerville. Poliakoff looks at the insidious role that technology plays in all our lives. The video camera becomes an interruption in the daily existence of Rick and Victoria and their friends and relations as the couple prepare for their wedding, to such an extent that the video diary they are recording begins to take over their lives.

Breaking The Silence book. Based on Poliakoff’s Russian family, it follows their survival after the Revolution. They are a wealthy Jewish family from Moscow and Nikolai, the head of the family, is made Telephone Surveyor of the Northern Railway – the set is a once luxurious imperial-style railway carriage. The central theme is Nikolai’s inability or refusal to modify to the new circumstances of post-Revolution Russia. He has no interest in his post and fails to complete any of his tasks, his only interest is as an inventor, his grand scheme being to invent ‘talking pictures’.
