Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed was written in Judaeo-Arabic near the end of the 12th century, and soon thereafter translated into Hebrew by Samuel ibn Tibbon. It immediately became a source of controversy, reviled by some segments of medieval Jewry, but actively championed by others. Philosophers, kabbalists, and rabbis studied and defended the work within their communities, though not necessarily uncritically. For some philosophical defenders of the Guide, the book had a salvific character.

Mishnah’im Perush HaRambam (Jerusalem: Mossad HaRav Kook, 1963–1965). The two volumes which contain most of the material on prophecy are Seder Zera’im and Seder Neziqin. The Mishneh Torah was completed in 1184.

The Guide for the Perplexed (Hebrew: מורה נבוכים, Moreh Nevukhim; Arabic: دلالة الحائرين‎, dalālat al-ḥā’irīn, דלאל̈ת אלחאירין) is one of the three major works of Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, primarily known either as Maimonides or RaMBaM (Hebrew: רמב"ם‎). This work seeks to reconcile Aristotelian philosophy with Hebrew Bible theology, by finding rational explanations for many events in the text.

Buridora
I have studied Maimonides for some time and have read his major writings. This study of selected parts of the Guide is difficult for me to take too seriously. The author, Dr. Bakan, is a psychologist, and like Freud he sees SEX everywhere. He says, for instance, that Genesis' term for the place touched on Jacob by the being representing God signifies by implication Jacob's Penis. Perhaps. That could be in line with the lovers representing God and Israel in Song of Songs. But based on no further evidence it seems a reach.

Maimonides's book as a whole is substantially in agreement with the very practical Akiba of a thousand years before, therefore concerns the theories of Correspondence and Utility regarding Truth (Aristotle and Akiba respectively.) Maimonides obviously sees the conflict and recommends Utility for everyday things and correspondence for the more remote nature of things. The book gives much too much weight to Sex in proportion to its importance in Guide.

Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed is a book purposefully riddled with false conclusions and dead ends to hide the author's intentions: the revealing of the two great secrets of the Torah. Bakan's book carefully examines these topics, and reveals for the reader unfamiliar with the techniques of Jewish Medeval Philosophy (inspired by Muslim philosophers like Al-Farabi) the heart of those secrets. Well written and concise, one should read the Guide first, and then Bakan's book second. All the pieces will then fall together.
