A History of Modern Germany 1800-2000. With the present volume, distinguished historian Martin Kitchen adds to an already impressive collection of recent general histories on modern Germany. The author boldly asserts that his narrative approach is preferable to theoretical approaches of the postmodernists, whom he criticizes for dissolving history "into a series of unconnected events, trends, and data" (p. 8). Kitchen uses a narrative approach to explain the. key watersheds in modern German history from the Napoleonic occupation to reunification and beyond.

Excellent book! Congratulations to the author! I am not a historian, but a Public Administration specialist, and I found in the book a lot of honest sayings on the 19th Century Germany and some historical facts hard to find in other books on the History of Germany. Martin Kitchen talks about the German people of three centuries, the 18th, 19th and 20th, describing the profiles of the most important politicians of each of these eras with a very funny richness of sordid, but true, details. The author talks on Bismarck's political ingenuity as no other ever talked on the founding father of the modern Germany, showing a real man behind the politician.

Many of Kitchen's views seem brilliant to me, but others are quite idiosyncratic. I think he does a much better job with the period after 1933 than with the 19th century. To my mind this is unfortunate because one cannot really understand 20th century Germany unless one understands the 19th century in some detail. I would recommend the book to students who already know something about Germany from closely related course work.

I have to say that I was not impressed by this highly appraised book. When reading it I noticed immediately that a quarter of the book deals with Weimar Republic and Third Reich, but also the absence of notes and abbreviations. Especially political aspects are described in absolute detail whereas social and cultural aspects seem way too general and at stages blurry when compared to the political "narrative". Kitchen wrote in the introduction that his narrative would be Rankean, but the text does not even come close to Rankean historiacal writing, in particular with his very negative personal descriptions of William II, Hitler and Eastern German leaders. We can have our opinion but for an undergraduate textbook I do not think it to be appropriate. I have also noticed that several quotes and facts are wrongly translated or described. Would I have known the poor quality of the book - and there are much better, even though older, books out there - I would not have spent the money on it.

Very informative about German history, but at times can be a dry read. Also seems slightly biased from the author's point of view, but overall a wonderful overview of German history.
