Robert Fossier (4 September 1927 – 25 May 2012) was a French Historian, specializing in the Western Middle Ages. Robert Fossier was born into Catholicism. His father, a soldier who served in World War I, was angered by the Munich Agreement. His mother, a piano teacher, encouraged an interest in history and fiction. He did his secondary education in Paris, first at the lycée Janson-de-Sailly, then at the lycée Henri-IV, where he prepped for the entrance exam of the École des chartes.

In Europe, three classes of peasants existed: slave, serf, and free tenant. Peasants hold title to land either in fee simple or by any of several forms of land tenure, among them socage, quit-rent, leasehold, and copyhold.

Summary: Overall, the life of a medieval peasant was extremely rough. Most peasants spent the majority of their lives farming and trying to make enough money or produce enough goods to support their families. Although the status of peasants would improve very slowly following the medieval period, the peasantry in Western Europe experienced the abolishment of serfdom much earlier than their Central and Eastern European counterparts. David Starkey Medieval Books. A Year in the Life of Medieval England. Summer of Blood: The Peasants' Revolt of 1381.

A history of peasant society in Europe from the tenth to the mid-fourteenth century, the text provides a detailed picture of the peasants' daily life, discussing among other things the food they cultivated and ate, the houses and villages they lived in, their customs and taboos. In particular, the author considers their relationship to the land they grazed and tilled and to the lords who controlled the land. He also describes the critical role played by women in the medieval economy and medieval society. Additionally, the book looks at the peasant as an individual within the rural community, exploring changes in his legal status and economic condition, family relationships and structures, and inheritance customs. Combining traditional historical methods with insights drawn from archaeology and anthropology, this is a contribution to a key topic in our understanding of the Middle Ages.
