The Long Walk is a novel by American writer Stephen King, published in 1979, under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. It was collected in 1985 in the hardcover omnibus The Bachman Books, and has seen several reprints since, as both paperback and hardback. One of the guards was eating C-rations from a can and reading a comic book. Garraty watched the guard eating and reading and thought for the ten thousandth time: It’s all real.

Only death can keep you from the finish line-in the ultimate competition of the all-too-near future. To me the Universe was all void of Life, or Purpose, of Volition, even of Hostility; it was one huge, dead, immeasurable Steamengine, rolling on, in its dead indifference, to grind me limb from limb. One of the guards was eating C-rations from a can and reading a comic book. And now, at last, the thought began to swing some weight.

Poetry has such a tiny audience because so much of it appeals to a "spiritual" element in our makeup. Most poets quickly starve of oxygen in this air-fairy atmosphere. Lieberman's poems, while maintaining a solid core touching on the puzzling essences of mankind, is immediately graspable by those of us who admire descriptions of the human condition, but prefer them in the vernacular of everyday experiences. A fascinating read, particularly for the non-poets, i.e., most of us.

I loved TT, TH & TLWH. I must say at first it seemed entirely inaccessible. But there was something about the images & rhythm that kept me reading. I learned to read slowly, to not try so hard, and somewhere along the way it started to make sense to me, first I kind of felt it then I started to understand it (or at least my interpretation.) It moved me. Melvin flips me out. Ideological thighs and politicking breasts. At the Pond. What a wonderful, and intimate, experience. This ol' engineer needed this.

I love these poems. It's so rare to see the existential issues we all confront presented in a non-maudlin way. This poetry stimulates feeling and thinking, and bypasses the hand-wringing,keening and moaning about life's lot that is expected and overdone in so much poetry. I particularly appreciate David Lieberman's keen insights and optimistic, often fun responses to timeless questions.

There is a reason why editors from Maine,Connecticut, New Jersey, Virginia, Chicago and California have chosen to publish poems from this collection. David Lieberman touches us universally with insight into our humanity through humor, pathos and bathos. He shares with us the feelings of inconsequence and the struggle to discover our worth and our joy, with purpose and an insistant instinct for survival. From the stanza, "yet I have no story/(nothing happened)/& what I've seen/begets a yawn// to a line from a prelude to "Melvin's song", "I trod on the ice, broke through, hi ho...".
