This is a book some people would put in their toilet for casual browsing but I myself wouldn’t do that as I wouldn’t ever wish to conflate the activities of reading (essential, stimulating, moving, gripping) with visiting the bathroom (essential, but never stimulating, moving or gripping, except in life-threatening situations which fortunately are very rare). This is a book t I had fun with this book of alternative movie lists. The title is derived from the first (and last) date that Robert De Niro has with Cybil Sheppard in the film Taxi Driver when he takes her to a porn film.

The book has some surefire conversation starters, be it the clever title (10 Bad Dates with de Niro) to 10 Films It’s Painful to Like and 10 Places You Wouldn’t Expect to Find a Severed Head. But even the ones with great titles (The 10 Most Gratuitous Uses of Sex and Nudity in the Oeuvre of Paul Verhoeven or The 10 Worst Wigs an Actor Dared to Wear or even 10 Great Films I Haven’t Seen) end up being so obscure and snobby that the enjoyment is taken right out of them.

It's been a long time since I've come across a set of lists quite so piquant and entertaining as Ten Bad Dates With De Niro.

The concept of this book is simple enough -- many film reviewers and some directors in the U.S. and the U.K. were asked to generate lists of different types of movies and to write briefly about why each film they chose qualifies for the list. For example, Kieron Corless and Chris Darke on bad decisions by the Cannes jury, Richard Kelly on "inimitable line readings" by Christopher Walken, films with unexpected severed heads, by Anne Billson, and so on.

The lists themselves are of little interest, but they give the authors the opportunity to write about films that interest them and in the process to educate readers who care about films. Some Hollywood blockbusters are in evidence, but smaller films, especially from the U.K. are well represented. I found myself jotting down the names of a dozen films or so by the end of the book, intended to view them in the future.

A fun book of top ten lists where the categories are things like "Ten Brooding Architects" or "The Coen Bros' Ten Most Memorable Minor Characters" or "Ten Great Opening-Credit Sequences." The writing is witty and knowledgeable. The many contributors are film critics, writers, film historians, film-makers, playwrights, and even an agent or two. The lists are expansive - including foreign films and those from times gone by.

If you love good visual storytelling, and you've forgotten too many good movies, check out this book, it will definitely have you running over to Netflix to add things to your queue.

Writers, directors, filmmakers, etc. list their top 10's on various cinematic "achievements." Here are a few list titles : Ten Gratuitous Machine Gun Frenzies, Ten Angst-Ridden Piano-Playing Protagonists, Ten Great Thespian Turns in Drag. Each list has an introduction and each item on the list is further explained, sometimes with historical references and context in time.

If you're a cinema junkie, you will LOVE this book. If not, like me, the lists themselves will be selectively appreciated, without need for the excessive explanations found therein. (Excessive only because I'm not a cinema junkie.) At 458 pages, you had better be prepared!! It's certainly not exhaustive, cinema-wise, and it is subjectively selective.

Cinemaphiles will enjoy reading this, if only to be inspired to make their own lists after disagreeing with what they read! Have fun.

I’ve been trying to limit my screen time before bed (violating that to write this review) but I’ve had trouble finding reading material that isn’t so interesting I can’t put it down or so dry I get frustrated. This has been the best so far. I bought it on sale years ago and recently rediscovered it on my book shelf. Interesting enough to keep me engaged but not keep from getting sleepy. Searching for more like it.

Some great lists here (and some that miss the mark) which, I have to say, started a gew arguments with myself and some friends. There's a lot to disagree with here, but that's half the fun of books like this. Or (as in the case of Never Trust A Screenwriter - 10 Loose Adaptations, we extenbded the list out to more than 30...) it can springboard you own thoughts on the topics. And the lists aren't just given as lists - there are explanations as to why things were chosen, making the debates all the more fiery. Fun book.

There are hundreds of books out there full of film lists - on the top 10 or 100 or 101 or 1001 greatest movies/worst movies/most expensive flops/greatest stars/most important film directors whatever.
This book has fun with the idea, with some truly original and often very funny Top 10 lists. The writing is witty, and the writers (including the Coen Brothers, Steven Soderbergh, and DBC Pierre amongst others) know their films, so small international films are as likely to be included as big Hollywood fare.
The top ten lists include unlikely categories like 'Dodgiest Decisions of the Cannes Festival Jury', 'Worst Wigs an Actor Dared to Wear', 'Gratuitous Machine-Gun Frenzies' and dozens more.
Seriously, it's possibly the most enjoyable film book I've read since Michael Medved's Golden Turkey awards books from many years ago.

I don't really have much more to say than that. You won't want to read this in one sitting; 57 is just about right.
