The Europeans: A sketch is a short novel by Henry James, published in 1878. It is essentially a comedy contrasting the behaviour and attitudes of two visitors from Europe with those of their relatives living in the 'new' world of New England. The novel first appeared as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly for July–October 1878. James made numerous minor revisions for the first book publication.

It made me fall in love with Henry James (but I fell out after I read Turn of the Screw). The Europeans by Henry James. Published by MobileReference (mobi). Henry James is one of the best American writers. Reading this novel has made me very excited to read further works by James, as I plan to read the entirety of his literary output. It is the brilliance and charm of 'Europenas' that has instilled in me this excitment.

Henry James, the nineteenth-century American writer who was lauded for his skill with insightful, elegantly styled prose, was fascinated by the differences between Americans and their European counterparts. In this text, James takes a comic approach to highlighting the stark contrasts between the two cultures.

Henry James was born in 1843 in New York and died in London in 1916. In addition to many short stories, plays, books of criticism, autobiography and travel, he wrote some twenty novels, the first published being Roderick Hudson (1875). They include The Europeans, Washington Square, The Portrait of a Lady, The Bostonians, The Princess Casamassima, The Tragic Muse, The Spoils of Poynton, The Awkward Age, The Wings of the Dove, The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl.

If I had not known and loved Henry James in different incarnations, this would have stopped me dead cold in my pursuit of knowing him better. I may, in fact, have to re-think all of Henry James with the taint of this on my hands.

Those little blue tongues, dancing on top of the crimson embers, are extremely picturesque. The young Henry was a shy, book-addicted boy who assumed the role of quiet observer beside his active elder brother. Henry James, (born April 15, 1843, New York, New York, . died February 28, 1916, London, England), American novelist and, as a naturalized English citizen from 1915, a great figure in the transatlantic culture.

Although Henry James was himself none too fond of 'The Europeans', the novel has nevertheless proved to be a firm favourite with readers ever since its publication in 1878. The juxtaposition of two cultures with their differing values and expectations was fertile ground for James' comic genius, and he uses the varied interplay of characters to poke fun at the social mores of the day while at the same time attempting a more serious critique of New England society.

Great book. It made me fall in love with Henry James (but I fell out after I read Turn of the Screw). The Kindle edition seemed fine, although on a couple of occasions it seemed like there were missing paragraphs. But I can't be sure. Overall, a good reading experience. The Kindle edition has no page numbers, so you have to navigate 'by percentage.'

I didn't think this book quite as good as other Henry James books. It is certainly worth reading and a very pleasurable read. Just not quite as beautiful as some of his other works.

I wanted so much to love this as Henry James is a favorite author, but just could not get into this one.

The Henry James novel is great, First Rate Publishers is not.
