This paper examines the contributions of John Locke to philosophy especially his epistemology and his idea of the primacy of experience as the basis of all knowledge. For Locke, there is a clear distinction between simple and complex ideas. The paper also examines the concept of primary and secondary qualities, his championship of utitilerian values, features of his teachings and the implications of his practical work of teaching on child curriculum and education generally.

Joseph Margolis, Tom Rockmore. This fresh collection of essays questions how the historical process affects our conception of science, including our understanding of its validity as well as our general conception of knowledge. The essays in this book consider the philosophical labours spanning the work of Descartes, Kant and Hegel, still the philosophical basis of our modern understanding of science, as well as recent selected philosophers and historians of science such as Kuhn and Feyerbend.

One philosopher, Stephen Toulmin, has proposed a different strategy: the refinement of a plurality of field-related logics which are designed to promote special kinds of inquiry. Not only will logic have to become more empirical," Toulmin writes, "it will inevitably tend to become more historical. Still another major school of historical epistemology attempts to force all historical thought into an idealist model which derives from the work of R. G. Collingwood.

Over the past several decades, philosophers have grown to recognize the role played by frameworks and models in the construction of human knowledge. Further, they have paid increasing attention to the origins of knowing processes in social and historical contexts of human practical activities, and to social transformation of the frameworks over time. In a series of original essays by prominent philosophers, Constructivism and Practice advances the understanding of the role of construction and model creation, reflects on the relationship of these models to social practices, and considers whether our modes of knowing themselves have a history. These questions are thoughtfully considered in the light of the 'historical epistemology' first developed by Marx Wartofsky.
