Everything hummed of summer, like a golden beehive. A whirlpool of gleaming mountain-fields, olive hills, and a sky ablaze with an intense silence blinded us for mo- ments and so beguiled our hearts that ‘one longed for a word of redeeming joy. SIDELIGHTS: Ehud Ben-Ezer once told CA: "The Ben-Ezer (Raab) family has been living in Palestine since 1875. In addition to fighting the Arabs, the Jews in Palestine had to contend with the forces of nature, the climate and disease. It was dangerous to even ride from one settlement to another. Palestine is now flourishing, thanks to the economic and cultural riches that the Jewish immigrants brought with them.

Tracing the portrait of Arabs through the twentieth century, Ben-Ezer selects excerpts that make clear how Jewish writing in Hebrew has gone through distinct stages.
