Hilarious Kangaroo
An old fashioned love story, no emails, tweets or tinder.
I rembmer that it was also made into a movie which was wonderful. Actress was Kristina Soederbaum I do not rembmer the other stars.
Lost love, lost opportunities, and lifelong heartbreak realizing the single greatest treasure you have sacrificed for lesser things.
Hauntingly beautiful.
Many thanks for being able to access this book in 2015 having first read it as a teenager in the late 50's and being enamored by it at that point in my life. It was a true delight to be able to read it again!
Well told and perfectly written story by a relatively unknown German author in the US. The translation is excellent and accurate.
My German is good, reading, speaking, but a bit rusty for writing. I was SO impressed by this gem of a short novel that I ordered the complete works of Theodor Storm. If available in English it should also be good, but the beauty of his German prose will not be there.
I enjoyed reading this story.Storm takes the reader into a world where people had time to think and feel, and live honourably. Rather that being enmeshed with technology they related to nature. It enriched their lives. The story is timeless.
A classical German love story by a master of the novella form, the 'long short story'.
All good love stories are sad. This is one of the best and saddest.
Written in 1850 by a man who was appropriately called Storm, it was his breakthrough to literary fame and fortune.
My biggest surprise at this reading encounter is, that I realize: I never read it before. That's stupid. It's like not knowing a Beethoven string quartet.
The story in a nutshell: an old man remembers his childhood infatuation with a girl, and from there we move in stages to the end of their contact: she has married another man, because her mother wanted it that way. The story may be mid 19th century, but it is as contemporary as they come.
Storm was a poet and a writer of novellas. He didn't belong to 'romantic' literature, but is classified as 'poetical realist'.
