This short collection is titled "Prosas apatridas": the word "apatridas" appears to signify:

1) insofar as the pieces refer to a recognizable landscape, it is France, not Ribeyro's native Peru,

2) the pieces didn't fit in elsewhere in his writings, and

3) they are characteristic of a writer who intrinsically is at home nowhere.

The pieces are all very brief, two pages at the most. They range from brief life-sketches of what he saw around him in Paris, fully worthy of a fiction writer, through observations on various occasional topics, to philosophical musings, some quite profound and others perhaps mere expressions of Ribeyro's own cultural background; there is, for instance, an unaggressive machismo in the author's attitude toward women. But over the whole, Ribeyro demonstrates what seems to me to be a remarkable independence of intellect, a quiet alienation without anger. He was a professional pessimist, one might say, and if this cast of mind is unattractive to the reader, the book will be unattractive.

The book was published in 1975 , roughly twenty years before Ribeyro's death. He frequently refers to his wife and children. For some reason, I found it odd that he had such connections. We visualize writers in ways that, upon reflection, we have trouble justifying, even when their work is suggestive of autobiography; Ribeyro's work is not, at least the stories I have read. But all of the pieces in this book are very much in Ribeyro's voice.

My edition had a preface by Jose Miguel Oviedo; I did not find this preface particular informative or insightful, but Ribeyro's pieces should be of interest to anyone who has read his stories or enjoys careful, sober writing of a impressionistic, philosophical bent.
