Studying Teachers' Lives book.

Studying Teachers' Lives book.

Studying Teachers' Lives (Paperback). Goodson's book aims to fill this gap, evaluating various methods and providing a contextual backdrop about teachers' case studies and biographies. Covered are a wide range of issues from the importance of teachers' socialization to the questions of teacher drop-out.

Although we are perfectly able to construct academic justifications for using the approach, we know full well that the major motivating force is that we are both incurably and insatiably curious about other people’s lives.

by Ivor F. Goodson (Author), Colin J. Marsh (Author). Series: Teachers' Library (Book 10). ISBN-13: 978-0750705899.

Some of the chapters in the book provide a "how to do" approach for those wishing to study the teacher's life and work employing a life history method; whilst other chapters provide the kind of substantive and generic findings which might be anticipated when conducting life history work. There are a number of reasons for this.

Ivor Goodson has worked in universities in England, Canada and the USA, and held visiting positions in many countries, notably. This was followed by Studying Teachers Lives published in 1992 which took further the focus on teachers' lives and explored both the methodologies and the substantive findings emerging in this field. One of his recent books, Professional Knowledge, Professional Lives looks at how understanding the teachers life and work provides new insights into why reform initiatives succeed or fail. This book is the result of a large 4-year Spencer Foundation project on stability and change in schooling focussing on the United States of America and Canada.

The use of teacher biography and teacher narrative is an increasingly substantial educational movement, yet there is a dearth of material available to guide researchers interested in using these techniques. Goodson's book aims to fill this gap, evaluating various methods and providing a contextual backdrop about teachers' case studies and biographies. The studies included employ a range of different methodologies, allowing the reader to assess their varying strengths and weaknesses, but throughout they re-affirm the centrality of the teacher in educational research. Covered are a wide range of issues from the importance of teachers' socialization to the questions of teacher drop-out. All people who are using, or are interested in using, teacher biographies as a research methodology will find practical advice in this book, which is particularly appropriate for courses in professional development and leadership, and to researchers in teacher education.
