In this profoundly strange book, Charles van Onselen stalks Joseph Lis, whose criminal spree lasted nearly four decades, before he disappeared from view in the final days of the First World Wa. Grotesque, yes. His many crimes include savage beatings, rape both outside and inside prison and the coercion of poverty-stricken young women, many mere girls, into sexual slavery. But Lis was hardly a Napoleon of crime.

In this first reconstruction of the life of a dangerous psychopath, Charles van Onselen situates the private life of one man amidst the demi-monde of the Atlantic world to identify the most infamous serial killer of all time - for Joseph Silver's darkest secret of all lay in London, in Whitechapel, in the autumn of 1888. van Onselen Charles (EN). A chance encounter with Silver's career in South Africa set Charles van Onselen on a twenty five-year obsession: a journey to reconstruct the shadowy life and times of-in some ways to match wits with-a devious master criminal. From Russian Poland in the 1860s, where Silver was born Joseph Lis, to London in the 1880s, turn-of-the-century New York, Argentina, and Africa, van Onselen recaptures the dangerous demimonde of the Atlantic world.

Then someone such as Charles van Onselen comes along. Oh, and he was also Jack the Ripper. The central focus is on Silver, born Joseph Lis in Kielce, Poland, but with numerous other aliases. He was formerly employed at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he headed the Institute of Advanced. The Fox and the Flies provides a social, political, and economic history of the Atlantic (?) underworld from about 1890 until 1918, the year Joseph Silver was executed by the Austro-Hungarian military. The book tracks the life of Joseph Silver, whom van Onselen argues is Jack the Ripper. Onselen, Charles Van. Alternative names.

A PORTRAIT FROM HELL. In breathtaking detail, Charles van Onselen recontructs the life of an unknown man - a psychopath responsible for one of the most notorious sex crimes of all time.
