I only went to summer camp once; it was such a disturbing experience for me, I refused to ever go back. I was 14 when my cousin talked me into going to a religious summer camp with her. My parents loved the idea, so off we went. At that time in my life, fitting in and feeling accepted was very important; certainly I wouldn’t be the one to stand out from the crowd by disobeying my counselors. It felt like someone was holding my body on the edge of a 30-story building, telling me if I accepted Jesus they would let me live; if not, they would make me fall.

A Book of Memories (Hungarian: Emlékiratok könyve) is a 1986 novel by the Hungarian writer Péter Nádas. The narrative follows a Hungarian novelist involved in a romantic triangle in East Berlin; interwoven with the main story are sections of a novel the main character is writing, about a German novelist at the turn of the century.
