I expected it to be all about Calcutta and the work Dr Jack does there. This is an honest book about a man with a higher purpose in life; Jack Preger, known as Dr. Jack, was born in a Jewish orthodox family.

I expected it to be all about Calcutta and the work Dr Jack does there. Instead, the first 53% (going by my Kindle percentage marker) was about religion. I skipped most of that. Then there was a bit about Bangladesh and Calcutta, but it was skittered through with more religion. From an early age, he knew firsthand the sufferings of innocent people: several of his mother's family died in the holocaust when he was a young boy in England.

Dr Jack: Calcutta's Pavement Doctor. A proportion of the proceeds of this book will go to the Calcutta Rescue Fund, the Preger support group that is active in the UK and sent over £100,000 to Calcutta in 1989. A full list of contact names and addresses is given on pages 185–6. There are so many people to thank for their help that I shall just list their names rather than specify the precise manner in which each assisted me.

JACK - CALCUTTA'S PAVEMENT DOCTOR was also published by Bloomsbury. Once again it is a true story, this time a biography of a remarkable doctor who campaigns on behalf of the lepers and destitutes of West Bengal. An EVERYMAN television documentary, based upon the book, was broadcast by the BBC. I acted as consultant to the producer.

I was very disappointed in this book. I expected it to be all about Calcutta and the work Dr Jack does there. Instead, the first 53% (going by my Kindle percentage marker) was about religion. I skipped most of that. Then there was a bit about Bangladesh and Calcutta, but it was skittered through with more religion. Not what I wanted to read about at all.

This is an honest book about a man with a higher purpose in life; Jack Preger, known as Dr. Jack, was born in a Jewish orthodox family. From an early age, he knew firsthand the sufferings of innocent people: several of his mother's family died in the holocaust when he was a young boy in England. A series of circumstances led to his becoming a humanitarian who has helped literally thousands of destitute in Bangladesh and in Calcutta (now Kolkata). This has cost him his family (families). That is too often the plight of great men. Josephs, the author, presents an unbiased view of Dr. Jack. The book shows that family and humanitarian work on a great scale are unfortunately, almost always totally incompatible. Dr. Jack's perseverance, his dogged determination in the face of adversity, are unmatched by that of any other humanitarian I have read about. No doubt his sense of humour has helped pull him through situations that would have defeated any other person. A prankster, even in his advanced age (sending himself stool samples through the post in Calcutta, knowing they would be intercepted by those who spied on him)... he conserves his sense of humour to this day. Although it is true that the book is sprinkled with Dr. Jack's spiritual meanderings, the focus fo the book is the path that has led to the success of his foundation, Calcutta Rescue. It is a most interesting read. I feel, though, that the author was wrong in discussing Dr. Jack's son illness, obviously without the son's permission and to the possible further detriment of his health and of his relationship with his father. Having met Dr. Jack myself in Kolkata and having witnessed the destitute on the street, bending to touch his feet (a mark of high respect), having visited his clinics and his schools, and now, having founded a support group in Canada for his work, I can say that the book presents a fair assessment of Dr. Jack's life. Almost 25 years have passed since the publication of the book, yet, nothing has changed: not the dedication of Dr. Jack, now 85 years old and still working in Kolkata, not his dogged determination to do the right thing, not his love of humanity.
