A collection of Muggeridge's impertinent writings about the British .

A collection of Muggeridge's impertinent writings about the British monarchy. This book was my introduction to Malcom Muggeridge, and I kept the hardback continuously checked out from the library. Not only was it the funniest book I'd ever read, but it was enlightening also. Like most casual readers, it never occurred to me that writers would lie, but here was this writer exposing them. Frank Harris: His Life and Lies" is perhaps the most direct unveiling, but all these essays question the general view of their subjects. Later he would come to question the very mechanisms of media, and the way that these views come about.

It is about the life of on of Britain's great intellectuals, a former editor at Punch and prolific writer. He was often on the TV series "Firing Line" having great discussions with the late William F. Buckley. DVD's by the way are on this site of those debate shows with Buckley. I bought this for my recently deceased wife before she passed. She loved it immensely as it showed the farm in Robertsbridge, East Sussex where she worked part time as a teen as a housekeeper, and grew up there. It was loaded with memories for her, and it is a great introduction to one of the great thinkers of the 20th century. You will want to learn more about him, especially Muggeridge's encounters with Mother Theresa.

I am interested in Muggeridge, and really enjoy family albums, even though after I received this I found I was a bit uncomfortable with Muggeridge on every page! However, I liked his narrative of his time with Mother Teresa, which made the before-and-after-that-time even more interesting. Since this was basically why I ordered the book, I consider it a good purchase. Muggeridge is worth knowing, as he converted to Christianity at a time when many were proclaiming the death of God. Since he was a journalist, and experienced/chronicled the world I was caught up in during the sixties (especially), his life is historically valuable to me, and should be to any trying to make sense of that era.

Muggeridge effectively uses pictures in this book to convey ideas words could not express. Likewise, he uses words to supplement the photos in ways that are not covered by the images. Taken together the pictures and the words communicate holistically in this work. This was done before the multi-media age. Muggeridge had the gift of communication and this book is a worthy contribution in that regard.
Of particular interest is his grappling of ideas which resulted in a personal paradigm shift. He wrestled with what was real in the arena of ideas. This resulted in his conversion to Christianity. The pictures and the narration tell the story of a seeker who wasn't afraid to explore ideas from any number of sources before discovering Truth.
