Laughing on the Outside: The Life of John Candy. Laughing on the Outside - Martin Knelman. Funny and gentle, John Candy was loved by millions of movie fans for playing true-to-life characters. Whether as the irrepressible bon vivant in Splash, the misunderstood slob in Uncle Buck, or the generous lonely salesman in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, John Candy struck a perfect balance between self-deprecating humor and irresistible, emotional warmth.

Underneath his gentle, regular-guy exterior, John Candy was plagued by.Laughing On the Outside: The Life of John Candy.

Underneath his gentle, regular-guy exterior, John Candy was plagued by excess and insecurity, says author and cultural journalist Knelman. But while Knelman poses just such questions, he settles for repetitive and vague reminiscences of friends and colleagues and his own assumptions to answer them. The result is a choppy, circuitous look at Candy’s bad career decisions rather than the illuminating, cautionary tale of self-destruction it could have been. C.

I really liked this book on Candy. It covered some great early years of his life in theatre that I had never known which were my favorite chapters of the book. The writer also followed him well into his later years as he began living in L.A. along with the changes that eventually began to be problematic. I thought that the book was a nice length but being a huge fan of his I wanted more also, especially more pictures. Although I never expected his life to be perfect I am glad that I found out more about him but that won't change my opinion of him; none of us are perfect and I still would have liked to have met/known him. I have friends just like him and I see the issues that they have also. It's not easy for any of them because the world judges us on looks, not brains. From this book one thing that Candy fans can be assured in is that he gave it his all, 110%, throughout his career and he remained human also.

This poorly-done book, written National Enquirer style by a Canadian film critic, isn't really about John Candy's life but a long filmography of his movies with some second-hand scandal thrown in. There are few details and you learn almost nothing that you didn't already know. No one close to Candy is quoted and much of the material is taken from magazine interviews. The only interesting things were: Candy turned down a major role in Ghostbusters because he wouldn't get paid enough; Candy refused to take a percentage of profits of Home Alone; and Candy invested in a Canadian hockey team with a crook. Namely, the actor had really bad business sense.

Most infuriating are the author's comments about Candy movies, slamming most of them. The writer ignores some of the hits (giving Cool Runnings two pages and Rookie of the Year one sentence!), while wasting too many pages on bombs no one saw. And half the book seems to be more about the history of SCTV than about John Candy.

Not worth reading--even for the die-hard Candy fan.

I received my package quickly. Archive was excellent as was the price. Not a huge fan of the price stickers on the dust jacket but for the price it's a good compromise.

This book gives some biographical history on John Candy but seems to focus even more on Second City comedy group. The only thing this book told me about John Candy that I didn't know was he tried to lose weight many times, and some details about his house in Canada. Along with the fact that he could be one to impulsive in a good way. Other then that there isn't much info here about John Candy. I know it was written posthumously but it could have been so much better. As a huge John Candy fan, I was really let down by the quality of this book.

However, if you're interested in the Second City Comedy Troupe then this book is for you. You will learn so much about Second City that the John Candy parts will become the whipped cream on the sundae. Stuff about John Candy becomes delightful little filler in the book.

A interesting look at this late tragic comedian.
