A likely story - and probably true. The Al Jolson Show repartee following a trite, scripted Al Jolson joke. Groucho Marx got back into the detective business again on Halloween of 1939. This time he solved, with some help from me, two more Hollywood murders and also managed to break up a spy ring and almost start another radio show. He was proud of what we were able to accomplish as detectives and counterspies. I can modestly state that I taught the FBI a few new tricks, Groucho told reporters afterwards

This is a nostalgic reminiscence of the long-running "You Bet Your Life" show, which started out on radio and then in 1950 moved to television. It was in the top ten in ratings during the entire period it was on the air, up until near the end.

What strikes me about the account is how carefully choreographed the show was, belying the impression that it was casually done using Groucho's great ad lib ability. In fact, the show used many writers, and the guests were extensively interviewed beforehand to determine areas of interest and humor. If something didn't work on the show, they simply edited it out, as they shot more footage than they needed for each show.

The book gives the reader a good feel for what the show was like for those making it. You get the feeling that this was the perfect TV vehicle for Groucho's unique brand of humor. Certainly the TV audience appreciated it by keeping it on the air for so long.
