IF THIS WAS HAPPINESS A Biography of Rita Hayworth. Ms. Leaming, the author of a fine biography of Orson Welles, has created a convincing historical portrait of Rita Hayworth's world. 404 pp. New York: Viking. The book teaches a harder lesson: Rita Hayworth's tortured childhood, so well described in the early pages of ''If This Was Happiness,'' shaped her. Had she remained poor, she would probably have led at least as sad a life. Hollywood did not destroy her.

I’ve long felt Rita Hayworth was the most beautiful of all the old Hollywood stars. After I grew bored of an incredibly bad video biography of her, I searched to find a book about her. I came up with Barbara Leaming’s If This Was Happiness: The Biography of Rita Hayworth. I’m so glad I did. I knew so little about her life, but I had loved her performances all my life, particularly those in Pal Joey and Down to Earth. There she was, gorgeous, elegant, and letter perfect. She seemed to do her acting and dancing with total ease. And that, having read this bio now, was an amazing feat. Poor Rita was a victim her entire life, from the control and abuse of her father to her stormy marriages to the final crushing blow, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in an era when little was known about the disease. In fact, initially, because the disease was so obscure, her erratic behavior was attributed to alcoholism. Leaming’s meticulously researched work informs us about the afflictions in Rita’s life, and it gives us great detail about the mess she made of it. She was her own worst enemy long before the dementia set in. But we find that all the bad and crazy behavior stemmed, as Leaming makes clear, from her relationship with her father. And yet—until her thinking process was taken away—she was the consummate professional. When she walked onto a soundstage to begin filming, she was letter perfect, totally prepared, and ready to wow her audiences as she did me many times. She has been dead now since 1987, but after having read this book, I weep for her.

This book is well worth reading; it is so sad, and very heartbreaking. What a talent, but what a horrible life she went through, and then to get Alzheimer,s disease, and the slow agonizing death she had to go through. and the men who made a slave out of her, and took full advantage of her; it is very disgusting! People can learn a good lesson from her life story; especially women. I love Rita; her father destroyed her life, and i hope he is rotting in hell for it!! This book is worth buying.

Barbara Leaming: If This Was Happiness: A Biography of Rita Hayworth, Viking Adult; 1st, 1989

>>>A beautiful actress, a gifted dancer, a fiery screen temptress linked to some of the most handsome men of her generation, Rita Hayworth seemed to live the life that dreams are made of. But the reality behind the fantasy was a harsh one. Sexually abused by her father as a young girl, Rita constantly searched for a man to save her, marrying five times. At the age of forty-two, Alzheimer's disease began to ravage her mind, cutting short her career at its peak. A haunting and sympathetic tribute to the talented but insecure beauty who was created, and ultimately destroyed, by the movies.<<<Publisher's Weekly

Rarely is a publisher's review so much to the point! I would perhaps emphasise Miss Hayworth's high professional qualities as both an outstanding actress and a fabulous dancer - it showed best when with capable partners like Orson Welles (The Lady from Shanghai is best) and Fred Astaire, respectively. All the more a pity that the rest of her life was such emotional chaos and ended in such dreadful disease.

I had heard of Rita Hayworth. I knew she had been a movie actress but did not know anything else about her. It was obvious from this book that she did not live a charmed life. Starting out as a dance partner for her ambitious father at the age of 12 when she was known as Margarita Cansino, she gravitated to men who either controlled her or used her in one way or another. It does not seem that she ever found happiness. I enjoyed the book for the most part, but I would have preferred not to have so much psychological evaluation all along the way, especially in the beginning. Also, apart from noting that she died in 1987, the book did not go into her very final days and death.

As a fan of the legendary "Love Goddess", I have collected quite a bit of Rita material,
including pictures, DVD's to relive the great movies, and the limited assortment of
biographical information which is available in print. I can recommend this fine
biography, written by Barbara Leaming, with only a few reservations. I think
that, without a doubt, it's the most comprehensive and introspective biography
published to date. It is told in an easy to follow chronological order, especially
focusing on her early family life and marriages and with appropriate references to
the milestone films that marked her public career. As the title would foreshadow,
the portrait is a melancholy one, speculating on the possible family abuses that
set the stage for numerous dysfunctional relationships that plagued her adult life.
(The title comes from a quote given Ms. Leaming by Orson Welles during interviews
given her for the development of an authorized biography of himself.)
While Leaming's biography is perhaps the most complete, it plods down-hill, as
apparently Rita's own life did, from the glamorous years to the utterly depressing.
While Leaming's biography doesn't portray the years of decline in as depressing a
light at James Hill's Memoir does, it is nevertheless not a very cheerful read.
I might add that this biography could be read as a companion to the now out-of-
print Ringgold book: Rita Hayworth: The Legend & Career of a Love Goddess.
Ringgold's book is the best encyclopedic and annotated guide to the films of Rita
Hayworth. The now hard to get Ringgold book was published by Citadel Press in
1974 (while Rita was still living) and contains not only a fine biographical sketch
of her life, but is the most complete reference in print, listing ALL of Rita's films.
It also has a far better collection of photographs than the Leaming book does.
To know the life of Rita, the Leaming biography, the James Hill Memoir, and the
Ringgold book should be used together. Each source covers an aspect of Rita's life
not shared by the others.
