Students whose field of studies will take them into research and/or testing procedures should consider this book. It covers the historical and philosophical foundationsof testing, the ethical issues involved, and goes into great detail on all the statistical aspects of appraisal. Parts of it are over my head but this is due to my poor math background rather than the author's style and content.

The textbook is basic and cover most assessments that a counselor may use or see during counseling. It provides basic details for most measures and that is its biggest weakness is that it is to basic. Most of the assessments I learned about in undergrad school. I was hoping for more meat and more detail when it came to the MMPI and other measures of psychopathology.

This book is horrible. Allow me to elaborate:
1. each paragraph has about 1-2 sentences of actual, important info. the rest of the paragraph is filler.
2. many operational definitions contain the actual word in the definition and doesn't actually clearly define anything. I.E. "Construct validity may be defined as the extent to which test results can be interpreted in terms of a particular construct (pg110)."
3. most definitions are worded VERY poorly. Nothing is clearly and simply stated. The only people who clearly understand this book are the authors and their relatives... and maybe a few geniuses.
4. The book has an uncanny ability to take a very simple idea, and blow it up into this gigantic construct that takes 2 pages to explain.
5. Numerous times in the book I've found the exact same wording, almost as if it's copy-pasted into other sections and slightly tweaked (ie, in WORD they selected a synonym) and tossed in so as to fill up extra space and inflate the word count.
6. Don't read this book in bed. You'll fall asleep. Guaranteed.

I don't recommend this book at all. if I could pour lighter fluid all over it and use it to light my campfires at night, that would, perhaps, bring some rest to my soul. The book would get some good use then. As it is now, I have to return it to amazon (it's a rental) for some other poor unfortunate soul to read. I pitty that fool.

This book is the first textbook I've ever read completely. It was very interesting and worded in a way that it was easy to understand, even for people like me who despise math and calculations! :) I would highly suggest this book - make your professors require this one!

This textbook does pretty well introducing a wide range of material and presenting an overview of supportive information. However, the CD rom could have included more explanations to enhance the learning experience rather than just a few case study style exercises. Hopefully the next edition of the CD rom addition will upgrade to include full sample report interpretations that will help to convey information as encountered in the professional world.

The text does a great job of explaining assessments. Loaded with example's and will show different methods. I enjoyed reading and learning from this text. It made the material easy to comprehend.

I'm in a graduate level testing and assessment course and this is by far the dullest text book I've had in my program. There are minimal real world narrative examples. We were instructed to purchase the textbook new so that we could have the CD that comes with the text.The CD offers one exercise per chapter in a Word document. Our professor made it sound like this information was unattainable unless each of us had the CD, yet only one person really needed to have it and could have emailed us all the marvelous one-to-three page document. These sample exercise questions ought to be free; perhaps they could exist on the publisher's website or within the textbook.
