Using an injection technique he observed that the major vascular supply originated from the radial artery and entered the bone on the dorsal surface. In 1938 Obletz and Halbstein described the results of examination of vascular foramina in 297 dried scaphoid specimens. They found that 13% of the specimens had no arterial opening proximal to the midportion of the bone, 20 % had one foramen proximal to the waist, and the rest had two or more foramina in this location. In 1966 Taleisnik and Kelly used an injection and dissection technique to investigate the scaphoid nutrient arteries.

When examined at high magnification, there was little difference in the appearance of the wear surface from one test condition to another. In the WC–Co hardmetals, the binder phase had been removed from the surface layers, and there was evidence for intragranular fracture to the WC grains. In the tool steel, decohesion fracture frequently occurred at the trailing edge of carbide particles. These results are complemented by examination of subsurface damage through cross-sectioning.
