Cardiogenic shock is characterized by a downward cascade in which myocardial dysfunction reduces stroke volume, cardiac output, and blood pressure; these changes compromise myocardial perfusion, exacerbate ischemia, and further depress myocardial function, cardiac output, and systemic perfusion. New approaches to cardiogenic shock have focused on mechanisms beyond mechanical support and revascularization.

Cardiogenic shock (CS) is a medical emergency resulting from inadequate blood flow due to the dysfunction of the ventricles of the heart

Cardiogenic shock (CS) is a medical emergency resulting from inadequate blood flow due to the dysfunction of the ventricles of the heart. Signs of inadequate blood flow include low urine production (<30 mL/hour), cool arms and legs, and altered level of consciousness. People may also have a severely low blood pressure and heart rate. Causes of cardiogenic shock include cardiomyopathic, arrhythmic, and mechanical. CS is most commonly precipitated by acute myocardial infarction

This timely and comprehensive review is the only book to focus onthe importance of treating cardiogenic shock as a discretecondition, not merely a symptom of another disease. The editors andauthors are esteemed clinicians and investigators who havefurthered our knowledge of the evaluation and management ofcardiogenic shock. Contributors to this book comprise aninternational group of multidisciplinary specialists with extensiveexpertise in various aspects of cardiogenic shock, who havebalanced their knowledge of pathophysiology and cutting-edgetherapeutic approaches with their experience and uniqueperspectives.

Practical management strategies based on the latest data fromrandomised trials of treatment strategies - including SHOCK, SMASH,and TACTICS - are discussed. Detailed reviews of related therapiessuch as ventricular assist devices, as well as special problemssuch as right ventricular myocardial infarction and rhythmdisturbances, are provided. The future of potential metabolicsupport of the myocardium is presented.

This book covers all the problems that wake cardiology fellows up at night in a cold sweat. Everything from electrical storm to IABP insertion and management.

Not only reviews the basics and epidemiology of cardiogenic shock, but also the difficult issues which face many critical care physicians. A must read and must buy for any nurse or physician involved in the care of cardiac patients.
