Dr. Stricker does an excellent job of explaining the physical and mental stages a child goes through from toddler to the teen years. If little Johnny can't hit the ball when he is four, this book helps explain why he has trouble at that age. If you have children in athletics or are a coach of children, then I would highly recommend reading this book.

This books breaks it down by age and what is going on at each stage.
The clearly explains why a child may, and may not, be able to do certain tasks, maneuvers, etc. due to what's going on developmentally in their body and brain. The book also explains what truly enhances a child's sports' performance, satisfaction and joy and what does not. I wished I had this book many years ago. It's a "reread."

This is an incredible treasure for the parents and coaches of young athletes. It is very well written, easy to understand and thoughtful. Dr. Stricker's knowledge on the subject of physical and emotions developmental levels of children and the impact this has on sports is supurb. Being a parent of athletes himself give a uniques perspective to the book.

Do you know any parents who push their kids to perform in sports way past the "fun zone"? This book is for them, but it's also for those of us who are trying to make sense of the increased commitments that are pressed upon our youth involved in most sports today.

This book is great! A must read for coaches, especially of very young athletes. As a parent, I gained alot of knowledge and felt this book was a reputable source of information. This book explains so much about what kids can actually do, compared to what is expected of them.

The nutrition information is very helpful and I learned alot there as well.

As a Board Certified Sports Medicine physician, I was very impressed to read this book written by a physician for a non-medical audience. In today's "win at all cost" society, this book highlights, in great detail and with obvious passion by the author, a practical and informative guideline on sports participation for our nation's youth.
This is a must read by parents who have children of all ages who are currently or will be participating in sports.
I applaud the author for this worthwhile undertaking.

Hopefully, this book will make you and your child enjoy his/her sports activities more.

I am an emergency medicine pediatrician with an interest in sports medicine and a mother of active athletic children. I found this book to be repetitive and boring - essentially the message is "Don't push too hard and let your children have fun." and that is all that is contained in the book. This message is repeated over and over with slightly different wording. No specific information such as pitch counts by age, expected specific sports skills by age, differences between recreational, club, and elite sports, etc. Also, the author is a distributor of Juice Plus, which he (subtly) uses his book to sell. I purchased my copy from the American Academy of Pediatrics and am thinking of demanding a refund. The AAP should not be putting their seal of approval on a book that is being used to sell this commercial product. I never write reviews, but was so disgusted with this book that I felt I needed to write this one.
