JOHN MORDAUNT was given his first fix of heroin as a birthday present when he was fourteen years of age. In the early days of fear and hysteria amongst both the general public and the medical profession, John went on RTE television to talk openly as an AIDS sufferer. He also featured in the BBC documentary 'Facing Up to AIDS'. John now works full time with Frontliners and the Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK's leading AIDS charity, counselling, lecturing and publicising a positive.

The John Mordaunt Trust (JMT) was set up in 1996 to honour the memory of an influential AIDS activist. The John Mordaunt Trust is an advocacy project set up to campaign for the health and human rights of ex/current injectors affected by HIV and other blood-borne infections (BBIs)

Aid minister Penny Mordaunt has drawn up plans for the UK to take more control of how we help countries around the world. The International Development Secretary has demanded a major overhaul so less of the UK's £1. billion aid budget is handed out through staff at international agencies. She wants to use the cash to fund specific projects chosen by Britain with more oversight to make sure money is not wasted.

She continued: It must deliver on both the core purpose of the Official Development Assistance (OECD targets) and also on the public’s concerns. John was deported from China alone as a result of his HIV status; when he had recovered from this trauma, he fought hard for the human rights of other men, women and children affected by AIDS. Essentially John was a harm reduction activist, who, towards the end of his life, began to speak publicly of drugs-use as a human right.

JOHN MORDAUNT lives in London and his time is spent helping others cope with AIDS and publicising a positive approach to life with the disease. He counsels, lectures and gives talks all over Britain. He featured on the BBC documentary 'Facing Up to AIDS'. Paradoxically, his life is happier than it has ever been since childhood. He grew up in Finglas, a massive new housing development built in the Dublin suburbs in the 1960s. In this wilderness the families of Dublin's overcrowded inner city were re-housed. Life was hard, and kids experimented with drugs. John was given his first fix of heroin on his fourteenth birthday. After that his life became dominated by drugs. In the early days, he and his friends saw themselves as a super-cool elite. It was like being a member of an exclusive club - the most exclusive in the world, John says, since the price of membership is your life. Then he was diagnosed as HIV positive. These were early days in the AIDS crisis, and John experienced isolation and terror when medical staff and family wore 'space-suits' in his Presence. Nobody would touch him. is despair was expressed in several suicide attempts. He went on the 'trip of a lifetime' to China, but was expelled when he told doctors there he had AIDS. Sent home, all by himself on a Jumbo jet! John has developed full-blown AIDS. But he has conquered his drug addiction and restructured his life. Contact with the Terrence Higgins Trust and Frontliners provided him with the impetus and support to develop a worthwhile and caring life.
