I'm 28 and taking the MCAT for the first time. I'm applying in June 2010 so I can enter med school in the 2011 calendar year. The MSAR book is very reasonably priced and includes answers to so many different question you probably have on your mind:

What's the application process?
What classes do I need?
What MCAT scores does a school require?
When should I apply?
What's the school like?
Etc...

My suggestion is to buy this book at least a few months before you plan on applying to med school. There's so much information in the book it'll take some time to review and figure out what schools you want to apply to. I've gone through and been able to figure out, based on my GPA and scores, what schools I'm most likely going to get accepted from. For example, if I wanted to apply to a school that's out of my state of residence, then I looked up how many non-residents were accepted to that school. One school I saw accepted 290 students total, but only 5 from out of state. There's no point in me applying there and wasting my application fee if there's no chance of me getting in.

Overall, I think this book is great and I'm glad I purchasd it. It's only about $25 and highly recommended (should be required, in my point of view).

This book is great because there's a section in the beginning about the medical school application process and all that stuff. It also goes through every accredited medical school in the US and Canada alphabetically. It is published by the AAMC there is no bias content. They report the facts. The tell a little about the school and they give you lots of stats so you can honestly assess where you have a good chance of getting into. They also don't rank school so it's nice to read through the book and be able to decide which schools you like and want to know more about without having school rankings skewing your judgement. Highly recommended. Great book! Great price too!

This is a great resource. It has everything you need to start looking up basic information on US medical schools, at a fraction of the cost of AAMC's new online MSAR. As a side note to future med applicants--this book, unfortunately, probably won't be as useful in 2015. Once the new MCAT is implemented, there's a good chance average MCAT scores will change. In the meantime, I couldn't be happier with this book or this seller!

I am an undergraduate student doing premedical studies and this is absolutely the BEST resource I have ever seen. If you're a premed student this book will be the Bible of your preparation and is a must have!
If you are a premed student and are browsing through other books about preparing for med school do not waste your time or money on ANY of them. This book has everything you need to know and more, all in one place. It is organized and easy to read and navigate directly to what you want to know.
It not only has a profile of each med school but info on the application process, mcat, financial aid, joint degrees and much more. It will answer questions you didn't even think of. No matter what stage you are at whether applying to med school or considering a career in medicine this book will help you. I've only had it for a few days and I've learned so much. Definitely worth the money.

You will find lots of information for every medical school. The book contains chapters that talk about financing medical school, diversity, and special programs. There are two pages dedicated to each school. You will find average MCAT and GPA for entering students, a description of the goals of the school, a list of requirements, and much more. Just buy the book!

The information provided in this book is very general.

For instance, how important is research experience, and non-academic activity in admission to each med school? How would each school consider the applicant's score of each subject on the MCAT? These are all informations that you cannot find in this book.

In addition, MSAR does not provide info regarding DO programs.

This book provides even less information than the Guide to Medical Schools, published by Princeton Review, which actually does a very good job compared to the MSAR.

There some other publications that are well-written and contain more useful infos.

If you are thinking about medical school this is a great book to have. It lists all the different MD schools and what they require, the stats from the school, community surroundings, school info and contact. If you are thinking about a DO school, the information is available online. Just google.
This book is great when you are working on your medical school applications. It really helps you decide what programs you like best and what are your chances of getting into certain schools. I definitely recommend getting the latest version since the statistics change every year. But this book is a great deal considering the amount of information it provides you with. You can't find this stuff on the websites and if you could, it would take you weeks to gather everything you needed. This was my number one reference when I applied and it helped so much!
