The Connection is a useful book. Not that their behavior was unique or unprecedented. And it is useful because it makes us think realistically about the Court itself. Perhaps this book continues to stir emotions precisely because it establishes so convincingly the political effectiveness of two remarkable judges-men who have too long been esteemed as models of a pristine judicial probity that in our nation probably cannot exist.

The partnership flourished in the conservative 1920's, subsided a bit in the early Roosevelt years (when Frankfurter was less doctrinaire than Brandeis in opposing the national planning experiments of 1933) and languished after Brandeis's activism carried him to the point of organizing Senate opposition to Roosevelt's Court plan of 1937.

Book arrived on time in good condition, including intact dust cover. The content is detailed and abundantly cited. Published in 1982, it does lack some important information that has more recently come to light, but in general documents the extraordinary influence of these highly resourceful Zionist justices on history.

This is a terrific look at judicial activism -- especially incredible for understanding how far the United States has come in terms of its thinking on what role the Court should play in political life.
