Geneen's soulful story of the loss of her father and beloved kitty touched the hole in my heart - all while helping me. .I have a friend who is a huge cat lover (animal lover in general) and if anything would tempt her into reading a non-fiction book, it's this kind of book.

Dec 24, 2010 Reese rated it liked it. Roth's book has three-star and four-star moments. Only one thing she says bothers her about this kind of book-and that's when the book really turns out to be all about Me! Me!

In this inspiring and joyous book, New York Times bestselling author Geneen Roth introduces her remarkable twenty-pound cat, Mister Blanche, and her beloved father,. The title is way too sentimental for this incredibly deep, brilliant, laugh and cry out-loud book. From the first page, I was hooked-and I never put the book down. Once I finished it, I started it again. Like all of Geneen's books, you have the feeling that she is talking right to you, about you, about your life, your family, your friends, your feelings.

I love the books by Geneen Roth. I find her life experiences and journey to be filed with insights so applicable to many. I had the benefit of having read Lost and Found, and I also have the CD, I listen to often. I am so glad I had the benefit of Lost and Found before The Craggy Hole In My Heart. IN Lost and Found She tells of the loss of one million dollars in the Berny Madoff scam. She also earlier in her life was "weeks away" from killing herself because of an out of control eating disorder in which she had extreme binges, gaining as much as 10 pounds in one week. Yet, eating so little at times as to lose 10 pound in a week. Yet, she found a way to make peace with food as nutrition-and not just a war with taking in as much of that forbidden food as fast as you can-"while the big mother in the sky has turned her head." Genius as she is, she has tied the way we eat to the way we spend together. BArack TO THE CRAGGY HOLE IN MY HEART AND THE CAT WHO FIXED IT. Geneen Roth grew up in a home, while having money, also had lots of relational problems. Letting go and fear of loss were almost paralyzing emotionally, a wonderful cat named Blanche came into her life. The love and antics of that wonderful cat, along with Geneen' s wonderful husband, Matt, her brother, Matt, and hosts of friends, go through the journey together. Geneen Roth gains insight into troubling aspects with her mother over the years, and understanding of family dynamics is freeing. Roth deals with the dreaded loss of her father. I do not believe these books will be for everyone, but if they are for you, then prepare for a treasure. Amazon has both the books. I find Geneen Roth to be charming, funny, honest, and a genius.

I read Geneen's first book in the early 80s and realized dieting was not the way to go. I worked with her guidelines but still didn't realize how food was an actual doorway into myself. I read Women, Food and God and "GOT IT". I immediately went to Amazon and purchased Craggy, Refrigerator and When Food is Love and binged on them! Watch out because they will open up parts of yourself that you are not looking at but that run you and your day without you even realizing it.
The first time I stopped myself as I noticed my stomach was satisfied, I felt the resistance and suddenly all these thoughts came up instead...finish your food, stop playing with your food, don't you know there are hungry children out there, you will not leave the table until you clean your plate...WOW, all this going on just below my conscious level because I would stay one step ahead by cleaning my plate no matter what the present stomach was reporting.
geneen deals with the underlying issues that led to overeating. Just amazing. THIS IS IT! Once I know what drives me to overeat, I no longer have to do it on an unconscious level. I recommend this book to those of us who have worn out the dieting mentality.

I have never read a book that hit me SO hard, and touched me so deeply. What most reviewers have already said, is how i feel, but i really need to express it again here.I have only read Geneen Roth in Prevention, but i cant wait to read more of her. I am overweight, a pet-lover (more dogs than cats), and have suffered the loss of both parents. The book is so beautifully written, and i felt like she was speaking FOR ME. I cried so much, that was the only problem! I cried early on in the book and it only got worse, to the end were i was sobbing til i couldnt breathe...but i really needed to let that emotion out, and for me that alone makes the book so special. If you have an eating disorder, love animals, have suffered loss, or just love a wonderful, moving story, buy this book. As another reviewer said, i will never get rid of it. I plan to re-read the ending, "the words of Blanche," many more times. We all need to be reminded about love, and that we're all worthy of it.

Considered merely as a book about a gal and her cat, it is a good, fun read. But when you add the layers of lessons about love and loss, of releasing assumptions and examining beliefs, of relatives and relationships, of beauty and faith and trust, this is a work which speaks to us us over-and-over again with humor and honesty.

Hands-down, this is the best book I've read this year, fact or fiction. As soon as I finish this review, I'm going to purchase copies to give away to friends and family... and I don't do that often. Then, I'm going to read it again!

If you're not familiar with Geneen Roth's books, you may not enjoy this as you would if you're a fan of hers. I've read all of her books, which are excellent. This book is good, and it goes into her past relationship with her dad, which wasn't as "perfect" as she recalled. She goes a little easier on her mom, who she seemed to bash somewhat in her other books. It clears up a lot of her issues with food & relationships, which helps the reader who has issues with food & eating. Oh, and if your are an animal lover, the parts about Blanche will make you laugh and cry!!

Never got it 'til I read this book. Raised only one generation from living off the land and hunting. Could not understand people with these relationships with animals, since they were fairly utilitarian in my life. Must read to stop being a bigot in this area!

One of the best books I ever read. It had me both deeply laughing and crying. If you are interested in taking a transformative trip read this book.
Great story & interesting lens to view life events. Would recommend this as a beach or casual read.
