The New Knitting Stitch Library : Over 300 Traditional and Innovative Stitch Patterns Illustrated in Color and Explained . Pictures for every cable pattern

The New Knitting Stitch Library : Over 300 Traditional and Innovative Stitch Patterns Illustrated in Color and Explained with Easy-to-Follow Charts by Leslie Stanfield (1999, Paperback). Pictures for every cable pattern. This book is pretty thin when you might spend a big amount for it. There are others on the market that seem to have these and more. I'm keeping it for a few of the patterns I don't have in my library already. If this is the only cable book you own it definitely will suffice. The paper is glossy, good quality. The patterns it contains are good ones.

If you have amassed a comprehensive stitch dictionary collection, I guarantee this will add unusual options in cables, lace, figures and panels. (k/p pineapples and all-over floral brocades, anyone?) The charts read right to left for odd rows, left to right on evens. This is a good, exotic stitch dictionary but should not be your first, or even fifth, imo.

I do not understand the poor reviews. I get it if you are a biginner but if that's the case buy a book for a beginner. This book is full of beautifull stitch patterns with color illustrations. My trouble with Treasury of Knitting Patterns is that the first book IMHO was quiet mundane. I don't want a book of old fashioned boring stitches - I wanted something out of the ordinary. This fits the bill. One reviewer complained that this book is full of 'cables and lace' (as if that's a drawback). There is much more than that.
Catagories Are:
Knit and purl stiches
Cable stitches - many of the cables have eyelets
Lace and bobble stiches
Twisted and other stiches
Excellent book - but beware - it's charted. If you don't like charts you won't like this.

Overall this is a good stitch library. Each photo is clear and shows the stitches wonderfully. They're all the same lighter shades of white, cream, and yellow, which doesn't do much for variety, but creates a good base to compare stitches. I'm not big on charts, which is ALL this book is, but the charts are overall very clear and most are easy to learn and follow. I've made several swatches so far (some "easy" and some "hard") and they've all turned out like the pictures. I do like the index at the front of the book with all the thumbnails - easy to find something quickly! I do wish that each stitch would have some sort of description or origin (like the B.G.W. books). I personally like "named" stitches (again like the Walker books), however I think not naming the stitches gives the knitter freedom to create a name for her/his project according to what she/he believes the stitch to look like. I already have a good bit of the stitches in other libraries (not quite half), but I think this book is a good addition to my collection and look forward to using the "new" stitches in up coming projects! I think this is a good book for eager beginners and seasoned knitters alike.

I just got this book a few days ago and I have really been enjoying it! I've swatched several patterns from the different sections and been very pleased.
The book is organized well; I like having the 'picture index' in the front for quick reference. The charts are clear and easy to read. Most patterns will require just one or two repeats to familiarize yourself with any unusual symbols used in the chart. There are a few patterns (the simpler knit and purl patterns) which appear with both charted and written instructions, so that you can get some additional practice beyond the examples in the introduction. Raw beginners might have some trouble, e.g. conceptualizing that a dot indicates a purl stitch on the right side of the work and a knit stitch on the wrong side; but if you have a decent grasp of the fundamentals and a good knitting reference book to help you with unfamiliar techniques, you're set.
There are quite a few patterns in this book which I absolutely adore and can't wait to design projects to use them in. Many of the cable patterns in particular are intriguing - different and fresh without being wacky. But I'm partial to cables, so maybe there's a little bias showing through....
The only thing that's lacking in this book is commentary on the different stitches' history, recommended applications, caveats etc., which is part of what makes Barbara Walker's Treasuries so enthralling. Even with that lack, though, I have to give it full marks as an inspiring knitting stitch library.

This is my first knitting book. I have been knitting for a little short of two years and was stuck in the land of the garter stitch. This book teaches how to read charts, the abbreviations, and what it all means. Extremely helpful with lots of pictures.

This one is no frills, but the info you need is there. Good charts. Some of the symbols aren't what I'm used to, but there's a full key in the book. The stitches aren't named, which to me is half the fun, but that doesn't hurt anything. Lots of interesting edgings and lace stitches I didn't already have. I'd recommend this as a good addition to a knitter's library.

A great selection of stitches.
I own several stitch guides. This is one of my favourites. The thing that distinguishes it from others is the part in the front where there is a small version of each stitch, so it is easy to find the stitch you are looking for. The chart technique for describing the stitches is different from most stitch guides, but it works fine. In addition, they've done all the samples in neutral colored yarns, so it is easy to see how the stitches compare.
