Subtitle is helpful : Poems of Color: Knitting in the Bohus Tradition. Interesting, pretty colorwork. There is a renaissance in Bohus knitting in the last few years, and it's largely because of the work done in Poems of Color by Wendy Keele. Jan 26, 2014 Poodytat rated it it was amazing.

The Swedish Bohus Stickning period was a halcyon one in the history of knitting.

I don’t remember how I came across it but was particularly taken with ‘Grey mist’ an. oems of Colour: Knitting in the Bohus Tradition. The Swedish Bohus Stickning period was a halcyon one in the history of knitting. Extraordinary designers were drawn to this cottage industry established by Austrian-born, Emma Jacobsen.

In 1995, Wendy Keele published Poems of Color: Knitting in the Bohus Tradition and the Women Who Drove This Swedish Cottage Industry. Her book kindled a revival of interest in Bohus Stickning, particularly outside of Sweden, offering the first extended history of the cooperative in English, including color reproductions of original design cards, and republishing photographs of vintage Bohus Stickning garments. In 1999, working with the Bohusläns Museum, master dyer Solveig Gustafsson sourced and dyed yarns to recreate Bohus Stickning garments from original pattern cards and instructions.

I haven't done any of the patterns from the book yet, but boy oh boy has it given me ideas.

The book is well-written and loaded with illustrations of vintage Bohus pieces. The patterns and charts are clear - an experienced knitter should have no problem following them. The color work is well charted, for those who want design their own project around a favorite Bohus pattern, rather than re-creating one of the vintage garments.

I appreciate the pictures of the re-created clothing. The recommended yarns aren't as fluffy as the vintage yarns, so the colors don't blend the way they do in vintage pieces. The color work will "pop" more than in the original pieces. I imagine that one could substitute fluffier yarns (more mohair, angora, something) and then brush the finished piece for a more traditional effect.

Had I written this book, I would have concentrated more on charting the colorwork patterns rather than providing instructions on making entire garments. That is, I would have been even happier with this book had it included charts for more of the distinctive Bohus color work and fewer instructions on how to make an entire sweater.

I'd hoped there would be more pictures of the historic sweaters. A great history and story of the women involved but I wanted to see the sweaters! I bought the book primarily looking for inspiration for a sweater I want to design for myself. While there are certainly some pictures (quite a few, sadly, in black and white--lacking the full effect of the poetry promised in the title) there are not nearly as many as I'd hoped. A great history/biography, not so great as a book about knitting design.

I've knit two of the hats from this book. The patterns range from easier to harder, and some look dated, while others do not. The patterns I've worked are clear, although I have a quibble with the charts. The color keys should be larger. When you have seven shades of magenta, it's hard to use the miniscule color key boxes to determine--- what is color 102 or is it 104? Definitely not a pattern book for a beginner. The patterns are really starting points to use in creating your own knitting.

This has been one of my favorite books focusing on knitting history. It has very few designs and patterns, but the story of this tradition and the economic opportunities it created for women almost makes it a book about economic justice. The author is a gifted story teller, I wish the patterns and yarn were available for those of us who would like to knit in this rich tradition.

This is only a initial impression of the book. I have not studied it nor looked at any patterns in detail. It is a good history of Bohus knitting and good examples of it. I am pleased in my purchase.

It was my wife's book and she loved it. Very creative and functional, too.
Livina
I loved the pictures and history in this book. It was very informative and inspiring to see these patterns come to life. The only downfall really does not belong to this book, the site to buy the yarns from does not have an online store. A hint to knitters diving into these patterns-do your colorwork one needle size up from the plain knitting. I can't wait to make my first cardigan, the blue shimmer pictured on the front cover!
This is the most informative book I've found on the history and patterns of Bohus Stickning knitting.
