The Jewish Children's Army of the Tsar. Published March 18, 2004 by Devora Publishing. As long as there have been Jews in Russia, anti-semitism has been an integral thread of the fabric of Russian society.

Two Jewish boys conscripted into the tsar’s Army, in Lithuania in the late 19th century. The photo was found among the author’s family records. What was a Nikolai Soldat? I wondered. It wasn’t until recently when I read Larry Domnitch’s book The Cantonists – The Jewish Children’s Army of the Tsar that I began to appreciate the dark history of my Russian/ Lithuanian Jewish heritage. Back in 1966, my father’s American cousins confirmed to him that he was indeed the grandchild of Arieh Hersowitz, who had been snatched from his parents’ home in Odessa at the tender age of 14.

Here, for the first time, are dozens of previously untold accounts gleaned from the records of thousands of Jewish families whose lives were destroyed when Tsar Nicholas of Russia conscripted Jewish children into his army -- for up to 25 years! The Tsar's declared goal was to convert these children to Christianity. This book also reveals the struggle of these youngsters -- ages 12 and above -- to maintain their Judaism against impossible odds.

Over 30 years, 50,000 children as young as 5, and 20,000 men older than 18 (many past 70) were kidnapped, marched for up to a year, and conscripted into Tsar Nicholas I's army, all for the purpose of forcing baptisms. Those who refused suffered torture, beatings, drowning. At least 1/3 died shortly after the kidnap.

A story many aren't aware of. Shocking to see how the mightier and wealthier succeeded in placing children (poor and orphaned) despite their young age in the place of their own children to fill the quota. Shocking that the government allowed this -- how could a 6 year serve in the military? Read so that it is never forgotten and is allowed to happen again.
