Jarena Lee (February 11, 1783 – February 3, 1864) was the first woman authorized to preach by Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, in 1819. She was part of the Second Great Awakening.

Jarena Lee's religious autobiography is among the most moving and profound of its kind, telling the story of one woman's journey to faith in a society hostile to her gender and race.

She was also the first woman authorized to preach by Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1819. Despite Allen's blessing, Lee continued to face hostility to her ministry because she was black and a woman.
Jarena Lee's autobiography provides amazing insight into the life of a remarkable woman. The Methodist church is blessed to have her as part of our history. Here's just one example: I have traveled, in four years, sixteen hundred miles and of that I walked two hundred and eleven miles, and preached the kingdom of God to the falling sons and daughters of Adam, counting it all joy for the sake of Jesus.
