Excellent book describing the various design bureaus, their airplane designs, and airplane development and performance. The book also includes prototypes that never entered production. It also describes airplanes developed by design bureaus that only briefly existed. Many of the latter designs were cancelled at the outbreak of WW II as the Soviets concentrated on airplane designs that were proven or could be modified and improved fairly easily.

Most designs are accompanied by text discussing "Operations." This wording is sometimes interesting: the author (Gordon) usually merely quotes the Soviet WW II propaganda descriptions, without adding any comments. Apparently the "Great Patriotic War" and it's heroic exploits are still sacred subjects in the new Russian Federation. Other "Operations" descriptions seem to be objective. One observation: some bombing operations that would have been regarded as minor by the USAAF or the RAF, and would probably not even rate discussion in western air combat books, receive great attention in this book. Maybe that is because the Soviet long-range bomber command (VVS) just didn't have the hundreds of bombers the US and Britain did and so never mounted air operations equivalent to Regensburg, Berlin, Nuremberg, or Hamburg. I guess you report on what you can!

It is also interesting to read how Stalin is treated. For example, on page 136, the author states "Stalin took an interest in the status of the unique [heavy bomber] unit ... On Stalin's initiative it was decided to strengthen the regiment...." From what I have read about Stalin and the USSR for many decades now, when Stalin "took an interest" in something or "initiated" something, it meant "Do it or else!"

"Soviet Combat Aircraft of the Second World War: Volume One - Single Engined Fighters" by Yefim Gordon and Dmitri Khazanov offers an unparalleled look at the Voyenno-Vozdushniye Sily (VVS), or Soviet Air Forces, fighters of World War II. The book is highly detailed, and draws on archival material newly made available following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The book starts with an introduction by Bill Gunston, a glossary, and notes. It then moves on to discuss the fighters arranged by design bureau, including: Bereznyak-Isaev; Bisnovat; Borovkov-Frolov; Gudkov; Ilyushin; Kozlov; Lavochkin; Mikoyan-Gurevich; Nikitin; Pashinin; Polikarpov; Silvansky; Sukhoi; Tomashevich; Yakovlev; and Yatsenko. As one can tell from the design bureaus listed, it covers experimental aircraft as well as those that made it to operational service. The book concludes with data tables on Lavochkin, MiG, Polikarpov, and Yakovlev fighters. It is loaded with photographs, three-view line drawings, and has a section of color plates. Overall this book is a "must have" for those interested in Soviet World War II military aviation.

On of the pleasant surprises of the fall of the iron curtain is that the interest for second world war aviation appeared not to be restricted to the western world. Since then there is a steady flow of books about Russian aviation and aviation on the Russian front, viewed from the Russian side.
Up until the fall of the iron curtain the main source of photographic material about Russian aircraft seemed to come from captured Russian planes flown by Finland, or from a very small collection of the same photographs which were used over and over again by everyone writing about the subject. Not so in this book. There are a few well known photographs, but there is also plenty of new material, new drawings and even new planes compared to older -western- books about the same subject. I was extremely lucky to buy this one second-hand for as little as 27 Euro -who wanted to depart from this book?- but I'm afraid that I'll have to pay the full price for volume two about multi-engined fighter planes, attack aircraft and bombers. Will there be more? A volume of the same quality about Russian flying boats or transport planes would be very welcome.

Yefim Gordon has written many books on Soviet aircraft. They are all good, and this is no exception. Here in the West, we don't know much about the "Great Patriotic War" as the Soviets called WW2. Staggering numbers of people, weapons were involved. This book shows the development of Fighter design in Russia from just before WW2 to the end. Bi-planes, early war designs which were inferior to the German fighters, to the last of the piston engines Soviet fighters, which were in many cases, better than the German planes.

There are 184 high glossy pages, charts, statistics, great black & white photos, line drawings and even four pages of color plates. MiG's, LaGGs, Yaks are all here.

This is an excellent book to round out your collection of WW2 fighter planes covering a topic that doesn't get much attention in the West - the contributions of the Soviet Air Force in WW2. Volume 2 covers the bombers and ground attack planes.

Volume 2 of the set "Soviet Combat Aircraft of WW2" covers the development, use of twin engine fighters, attack aircraft and bombers. Here in the West, we don't know much about the "Great Patriotic War" as the Soviets called WW2. Staggering numbers of people, weapons were involved.

176 pages, only 2 in color describe these planes. There are plenty of black and white photos, charts, line drawings describing these planes. I thought too much time was spent in the IL-2 (Yefim Gordon wrote a whole book on that plane, so a lot of it is duplicated here).

I don't think the current asking price of $60.00 is good - I paid 1/2 of that making it a good addition to my collection. If you have this book, you really have all you need (and is readily available) on Soviet bombers in WW2. I'm glad I bought it, rounds out the library nicely.
