one of the few books dedicated strictly to the German war against Soviet Russia on the eastern front, the largest front of the war. As such it deserves special attention to WW2 buffs and does have information i have not seen elsewhere. The personal accounts of the German soldiers are what i find most interesting...over and over you read the word "sauberkeit" (cleanliness) many Germans were shocked at how primitive the russians had to live day to day. You do not find many accounts of hard core nazis here, come to save Europe from bolshevism or the like, and not too much racial hatred or arrogance either, just soldiers doing their duty, many only to die on the frozen steppes for a futile cause. The accounts are those of thinking men, not monsters or savage killers primarily and the thing about most of their accountsi s their ordinariness. The German troops were the most part Christians and decent men, (I am aware of the "Einsatzgruppen" and SS units that followed along behind the army, wiping out komiisars and racial "undesirables" but these were the exception and abhorred as much by most front line troops as they were later among the allies. The Germans killed the Russians when they had to, often helped the Russian civilians if they could, but very few felt they were fulfilling some racial duty of "exterminating the untermenschen" or any of the other nazi boiler plate espoused by Goebels and the Nazi fruitcakes during the final "drive to the east" that resulted in Germany's destruction.

An in depth account of what to many Americans is a sidenote to history. The book is very readable while being extremely informative. The Eastern front was in fact, in my opinion, the decisive conflict of the Second World War. The resources the Germans were forced to commit to this conflict left them with inadequate reserves to stave off Allied threats on other fronts. This book provides insights to the tactics, equipment, and organization of the opposing forces. jThose who question our support of Russia during this period of history will perhaps better understand the overall roll played by the Red Army in bringing ultimate victory to the allies in World War 2.

Exceptional book on this theater of the war! A stark and candid portrayal of the ferocity of fighting on the Eastern front!

I read a lot on the the war on the Eastern Front, and this is a very objective book, that covers both the German and Soviet perspectives. The chapters are fairly short, which means you can not get bogged down on to much detail. Also I was amazed by all the new information I learned, especially about the partisan warfare, and how the climate of the Soviet Union affected both the German and Soviet armies. This is an extremely easy read, which the reader will find informative and very entertaining.

Worth reading, but little discussion on grand strategy and operations. Almost all the chapters discuss tactical combat activities at the Division, Battalion, or even Company level. There is little discussion of grand strategy, OKW or OKH decisions, or industrial mobilization. The book describes the war as conducted and experienced by the individual soldier and his unit.

There are many descriptions of battles being fought by soldiers sheltering from the winter wind and cold in huts and wrecked buildings. A question never asked or answered is: what happened to the people who had lived in those huts before the Germans arrived? Numerous books written in the 1990s and 2000s make it clear what had happened: the German armies massacred the peasants or drove them into the cold to die of exposure and malnutrition. You would never think of this by reading this book -- it all very antiseptic and the huts and buildings just happened to be there, all empty and ready for use.

I thought the writer made too many excuses for the SS and their actions. It has some interesting tactical information, but I do not agree with the beliefs of the writer on what the SS really was about. I did not feel the book was worth buying...get it from a library.

The What-if scenarios are baseless when the actual combat conditions nullify those strategies. James Lucas explains all of the obstacles that were partially or wholly unaddressed. Nazi refusal to utilize anti-Stalin sentiment in Ukraine sealed defeat. In addition, the communist mindset and that of the peasant soldiers meant there would be no surrender.

I’ve read many books on the Eastern Front but none of them addressed the horrific conditions that killed the majority of Germany’s best soldiers. And then you must add the delusions of the Berlin officers which were equal to Hitler’s. I came away with a much deeper impression of the necessity to not go directly to Moscow before first defeating some of the Russian armies trapped in pockets. At the same time, the war frequently had troops of either side surrounded and relief columns and breakouts were common place. It was interesting to compare the Germans trapped in 1941 in the Cholm pocket with those in 1944 in the Korsun pocket.
The discussion of the equipment the Germans used to knock out T-34s, the large scale use of horses by both armies, and the difference in tactics was very detailed.

The same logistics failures doomed Napoleon, Kaiser Wilhelm, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. History repeats because humans do not learn from the past. The book’s details and eyewitness accounts are a sobering lesson. Simultaneously, the belief that if you cause enough pain, the enemy will sue for peace is shown to be without merit. In few cases in history has an enemy quit without being on the verge of total annihilation. And an enemy that would rather die than surrender has been rarely defeated.
