Philoponus: On Aristotle. has been added to your Cart.

The ic topics are not confined to what we would call physics, if by that we mean em the scientific analysis of forces and the explanation of why a body moves.

Unlike Simplicius, Philoponus doesn’t quote from the presocratics so I presume he relies on secondary material. I’m not sure why book 1 was divided into two volumes as neither is particularly long. I find Philoponus’s train of thought difficult to follow at times and this book was nowhere as interesting as I thought it was going to be. It is a good example of scholarship from Late Antiquity.

R. Lacey, 1993 Philoponus, On Aristotle Physics 3, trans. M. Edwards, 1994 Philoponus, On Aristotle Physics 5-8, trans. with Simplicius, On Aristotle on the Void, trans. J. O. Urmson, 1994 Philoponus, Corollaries on Place and Void, trans. F. Schroeder, R. B. Todd (Toronto: Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, 1990). John sellars: bibliographical guide.

First published Thu Aug 11, 2005; substantive revision Tue Aug 22, 2017. The study of Aristotle through close textual reading of his works continued, if not increased, in Late Antiquity.

Book 2 of the "Physics" is arguably the best introduction to Aristotle's work, both because it explains some of his central concepts, such as nature and the four causes, and because it asks some gripping questions that are still debated today: Is chance something real? If so, what?

Book 2 of the Physics is arguably the best introduction to Aristotle's work, both because it explains some of his central concepts, such as nature and the four causes, and because it asks questions that are still debated today: Is chance something real? If so, what? Can nature be explained by chance, necessity and natural selection, or is it purposive? Philoponus' commentary is not only a valuable guide, but also a work of Neoplatonism with its own views on causation, the Providence of Nature, the problem of evil and the immortality of the soul. Includes notes on the text, and English-Greek glossary and index.
