An absolutely excellent book on a little know chapter of the struggle between the states. The civil war on the Kansas/Missouri border actually preceded the more formal start of hostilities in the east by several years. As both border wars and civil wars tend to be its was merciless and bloody beyond belief, starting with the psychopathic John Brown who like to kill people with broad swords to Kansas jayhawkers and confederate irregulars who just liked to kill people period. The men and women tempered in tis flame where a hard and fearless lot indeed, and many went on to play prominent roles in the settling of the west.

GREAT book on the Border Wars. Extensive use of actual diary entries of civilians and soldiers on both sides gives a real and chilling perspective of this relatively little-known portion of the hell that was the Civil War. Any fan of the conflict on the MO/KS border will appreciate this well-written book.
I love Mercedes
First, I've never studied the Kansas-Missouri border conflict, so except for a few names like Quantrill and Jim Lane, The Lawrence, KS raid and Order #10, this is all new to me. Mr. Goodrich book does cover the conflict pretty well, after a while I started to become as bored with the book as I get with modern so-called journalists who rely on twitter posts to tell their story. The book is filled with very short comments by the author followed by quotations, long long, some a few sentences from original letters or newspaper articles instead of incorporating them into his own writing. One almost expected to see something like "Quantrill then moved his raiders into Lawrence. According to Joe Blow:

#Joe Blow. I was in my house when..."

The book is okay, but I think I'm looking for something a bit better written.

This is the one. If you're intested in the border states guerrilla warfare during the Civil War, this book is the best foundation I have found. Lots of books on the subject but Goodrich does it best.

my husband is an avid reader and to find a book of any histrical content needs to keep his attention and this one does, he loves it.

While another reviewer wrote that they had never studied the border wars, I have read quite a bit. This book is really disappointing, at least I bought it used. The writer seems to paint a nicer picture of Quantrill, while ignoring his dark side. He makes Quantrill 'civil', which I think his victims might disagree with. He makes errors in when things happen, it seems like to build the story line. And as I read, I found errors or twists that were thrown into stories. Whether intentional or not, that was really frustrating.

The border wars were horrendous, and there was atrocious conduct on both sides, especially with the guerrillas, and with the Jayhawkers. But this is probably the poorest book I've read on it. It's fast paced, it's written in a way that makes you want to know what's going to happen next. But with no references, and no footnotes, there's no way to verify hardly anything.

Better books?
Guerrillas in Civil War Missouri, by Erwin;
A Rough Business: Fighting the Civil War in Missouri by Piston;
Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Missouri (all volumes) by Nichols.
And possibly Inside War, the Guerrilla Conflict in Missouri During the American Civil War. Unfortunately, I don't recall if I liked that one as much as the previously mentioned ones. I have read and own them all.

His lack of references (aside from a Bibliography) make it impossible to verify what he's written. And his neglect of mentioning how they were sometimes effectively fought is a significant oversight. Some of his book is true, some is slanted. But it's not balanced.
