The part America played in the northern war in 1918-1919 is neglected in almost all histories. The rest give it a sentence or two. This interesting history is told from the perspective of few of the participants, from the soldier's point of view. It is a tale of great perseverence under tremendously adverse conditions. It is not a rehashing of diplomacy or ideology. 11 people found this helpful.

The American doughboys grimly marched down the gangplanks and set their feet on the soil of Russia, September 5th, 1918. The dark waters of the Dvina River were beaten into fury by the opposing north wind and ocean tide. And the lowering clouds of the Arctic sky added their dismal bit to this introduction to the dreadful conflict which these American sons of liberty were to wage with the Bolsheviki during the year's campaign.

Captain America
The part America played in the northern war in 1918-1919 is neglected in almost all histories. The rest give it a sentence or two.

This interesting history is told from the perspective of few of the participants, from the soldier's point of view. It is a tale of great perseverence under tremendously adverse conditions. It is not a rehashing of diplomacy or ideology. It tells of supply deficiencies, social deprivation, courage, and almost 24-hour freezing nights.

Most soldiers see wars only in terms what they personally experience, or hear about from others. In northern Russia, the soldiers were isolated even more than is typical. To them, the immediate environment and problems of surviving were all that mattered. This was made harder with the knowledge that the war was ending on all the other fronts and that their effort was a "sideshow".

I recommend this book not only as a history, but as a study in human endurance.

The book is a bit dated with its prose, but it's a first hand account, and to get all this information from 1918-19 and get it published in 1920, is quite a feat considering how well it is written. 2,000 copies were issued in 1920. If you can get your hand on one it will cost 500 plus dollars, but getting your had on one would be hard. As the authors state, these 2,000 copies were made for the 5,000 troups and their families that went over there. Luckily, in 2003 a limited edition of 300 copies were made. At present you can still find one for under $60. If you have intest in this subject I would buy. The top books on this subject 1. Russian sideshow, 2. When Hell Froze over, 3. The Midnight War. All three mention this book, and use lots of the information contained in this book. However, for example, my uncle was killed in Maximovskaya, and only in this book The American Expedition do I find this village mentioned.

Purchased the book to read on the "original" Kindle. Very interesting despite some difficulty with the skippy writing. Should be a mandatory history subject in school.

Excellent story! However, the quality of the printing of the text made for difficult reading as there was insufficient contrast between the boldness of the font and the paper. I would not buy from this publisher again.
