One wonders, in fact, whether the phenomenon of mass schooling would have occurred at all without the extreme ambivalence towards human affairs which appears to have been characteristic of most of them. The social and economic ambitions that accompanied Upper Canadian educational reform were rooted in the fear that an inferior status was in fact to be the fate of the country.
